If you don't have one of the above . . . IF the water IS flowing, get a friend and have them listen to the pipe some distance away. Tap the pipe with a wrench, etc. Then have your friend move to the other side of you and the same distance away as before. Repeat. With any luck, the sound on one side should be louder--that's the direction the water flows.

When a pipeline is layed, the Governement officials and the company that undertake the job , prepare maps of the pipeline.
You can ask them the beginning and the end points of the said pipeline.

So you can learn the direction of flow.

The pipelines can carry crude oil, refinery products, water, coal (Crushed and mixed with water), milk (in Switzerland) , oils etcaetera.
