I'm not 100% sure but you might want to look up cushings disease. The bloat could also be a contributor like the one post said from once daily feeding of a poor quality food like "Ol Roy". I know because I just got a Chinese Cresteds' bloated body down and took off about 5-8 lbs. of it from feeding it home cooked food now from Dr. Pitcairns book recipies. After 3 months on the diet now the vet. says he's perfect shape and weight now. My GF is an angel and has been making up the diets for them (there's two).
Look up the cushings, I think it has those symptoms but haven't brushed up on any of that since we lost our Maltese in April.
I agree with the post that says also to take matters into your own hands if need be for the dog, that's what separates us from "them", I think you know what I mean At least we can live with ourselves because of our actions and conscience, which "they" seem to lack. I'm doing it for two Cresteds and "them" in my situation is my own brother neglecting the poor little guys, (former brother after all this is over). The only reason I even talk to him anymore is because I need to relay info about the dogs still in his care that the vet has given us and to keep being able to care for them.
Sometimes he can't be there when they need care because he has to go to Church or Bible study, yea one of those hypocrites, they are the worst to deal with.
One is 14 years old, blind and dying of kidney failure, I make sure to try and go see them both daily and let them know that at least someone in this stinkin world loves and cares about them. You couldn't put a price on the rewarding feeling it has been to help them as much as I can. When I walk the healthier one he makes me laugh the whole time, he's a cute little goof ball as I call him.
My thanks so far for everything has been to be told not to build the dying one's casket to big because the site is allready dug and if it's to big he'll just put him in a plastic bag and bury him. That will NOT happen I assure you. Hope your friend is nothing like my brother denial and personallity wise.
Do what you can to help find out what's up with the dog and good luck, I know it's frustrating to see this and want to help. The feeling you'll get helping the dog money can't buy.
Edit: Cushing's Disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is a common condition in older dogs, often mistaken for the aging process itself. Dogs gain weight, lose hair, urinate in the house, and make owners begin to prematurely consider euthanasia.

female dog, young? possibly pregnant, or extremely wormy, or very bad food causing bloat and gas. Barely walk? old? arthritis, injury? before you judge your friend ask her whats wrong with the dog. Maybe they are having it treated at the vet. Following you around is probably cause your a new person and it wants to get to know you. A dog following you around for love isnt a a sure sign of abuse or neglect. Get the scoop from the family before you think its being abused. Then after that, phone in a hot tip to the local humane society have them investigate. See if its something that can be fixed. Ask the family if they dont want the dog any more. Take the dog to your home and then if you cant keep it give it up to a shelter or find it a new home.

It needs to go to the vet. It sounds like it has a serious problem or maybe it's just old age. The dry nose is a serious sign. The shedding is a sign of stress on the dog's system (liver, kidney, heart, etc...). If your friend loves your dog, insist she takes it to the vet or else report her to animal control or the ASPCA!

If you have not taled to your friend. Ask her if she would like you to go to the vet with her. Tell straight upn that you think her dog is sick. Other wise whar are you going to do, Stand back and watch it suffer.
Sorry but I'm for animals first, humans missgivings, second. Heck if you have to snatch it up and take it your self.
Most vets will let you on a payment plan.

MAYBE SHE DOES NEED LOVE. THE DOG COULD BE OVER WEIGHT. MY ONE DOG HAS A DRY NOSE, OTHERWISE SHE LOOKS (AND IS) HEALTHY. I PUT LIP BALM OR CHAP STICK ON HER NOSE. IS THERE ANY WAY YOU COULD TAKE HER FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS? IF YOU CAN, SEE HOW SHE ACTS WITH YOU.

Did you ask your friend about it?
It needs to see a doc right away to make sure things are normal.
