I know you can get Persians shaved but i wasn't sure about this breed. My baby boy has a very thick coat and it gets pretty hot here in summer... Any suggestions?

yes, go ahead as long as you dont show the cat, you can shave him yearly. I have a mixed long hair that i shave when ever he gets matted. He looks funny for a while since they leave his legs, tail and face long. He has some confidence issues and hides for a day or two but eventually the hair comes back softer and fuller.

Its NOT CRUEL OR ABUSE to shave a cat for pete sakes. If you had a Ragdoll or a Persian or a thick long coated cat, you would know that keeping matts out is very hard to do. I brush my cat almost daily but frankly hes just a matty cat. I would much rather see him shaved then have him suffer painful irrating mats. Plus I HAVE air conditioning and its fine to shave your cat hes 8 now and has been shaved at least once a year since he was 2.

You can shave any cat, and often people who have long-haired cats and don't brush them, wind up with cats with matted fur. And so they take them to the groomer, and the cats get shaved. That is one solution to a hot climate. Another is to dip the cat in tepid water, until his fur is soaked through, then pull him out of the water, blot, and let him fly across the room and give you a dirty look. The evaporation of the water from his fur will cool him. But the short answer to your question is: Yes.

Nooooo! Don't do that! Think of how embarrassed he would be. Ragdolls have such beautiful coats. Keep him inside in the air conditioning and he will be fine. I have always thought shaving a cat was cruel and stupid.

Dont shave a cat's fur unless it has severe matting or a skin infection and the vet told you to!

If the cat hasnt got the sense to stay indoors or find a shady spot in the yard keep it indoors!

Ask your vet about this. It may be that just brushing and clearing the undercoat would help keep him cool.
