I'm a latter-day saint (called Mormons by 19th century persecutors and critics). I was raised Baptist, but ended up as an atheist for 11 years largely because of the hypocrisy and poorly-taught doctrine I encountered.
I'm on YA to defend my faith because a majority of the people posting anti-LDS information have been misled or, in the case of 2 people, blatantly admitted that they are lying to bring souls to God!
(How DOES that work, exactly?)
As Christ teaches and Paul reinforces, the worth of any tree can be seen in its' fruits.
In a year as an active member, my life has been transformed: prayers have been directly answered, I understand the guidance of the Holy Spirit, my daughter is happy... and I am not alone. Google LDS demographics for numbers.
My girlfriend joined in April, and she is the daughter of a Pentecostal pastor. He and I speak about our divisions regularly, and I have yet to be corrected on our differences in doctrine.

There are countless reasons we need the Book of Mormon but people obviously do not realize it. Sometimes rumors start and go around and are changed even as they are passed down the line to others. This also happened in the history of the Bible. As it was passed down through the hands of men, it was changed and tweaked to their likeness, thus taking away the things of our Heavenly Father. I believe the Bible to be the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly. Heavenly Father knew this would take place and had another record (Book of Mormon) writtend around the same time and hidden from the hands of men to be kept from corruption but brought forth to help us understand and erase the confusion the Bible creates. It does not replace it but is a companion to it. There are over 60,000 Christain churches today. Yet in the book of Eph. it states that God has ONE church. How do you find that true church? Pray and ask Heavenly Father yourself, and dont give up on doing that either. I'd like to quote a very knowledgable speaker: "One of the arguments often used in any defense of a closed canon is the New Testament passage recorded in Revelation 22:18: “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of . . . this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.” However, there is now overwhelming consensus among virtually all biblical scholars that this verse applies only to the book of Revelation, not the whole Bible. Those scholars of our day acknowledge a number of New Testament “books” that were almost certainly written after John’s revelation on the Isle of Patmos was received. Included in this category are at least the books of Jude, the three Epistles of John, and probably the entire Gospel of John itself.1 Perhaps there are even more than these." My wish is not to condemn any of you but hope that you would seek more of God's word, find a copy of it read it and pray about it. I promise you will receive an answer. One more thought, If you wanted to buy a Ford truck, would you go to a Chevy dealer and ask them about a Ford? I hope that you will go to a direct source, where no rumors or lies can begin.

I am a Latter-day Saint (aka Mormon), and I am not here to tell you to join the church or not. I will however tell you to please speak with local Missionaries of the church, perhaps attend a couple of meetings, and read the Book of Mormon before making such a big decision.
I do hope that you find what you are looking for, and that whether you join or not, that you continue to be open-minded and not hypocritical against those of different faiths. It does not matter what religion you are, or if you are Wiccan or Atheist, or Agnostic. What matters is what you choose to do with your life and the time given to you here on earth. IF you decide to become a Catholic or a Jehova's Witness... I wouldn't think any less of you, so long as you respect others. And that's all I have to say about that.

wow! there are a lot of wacked answers on here- and quite frankly i think they prove your point. But i am not here to tell you what church to join- that's up to you. But i will say that i have run into the same thing. i find it very hard to believe a church is founded on christ when they spew hatred for their fellow man from the pulpit- purely because they believe differently. people say we are these horrible misguided people that do horrible things- and then agree that we are very kind and family oriented? how does that make sense? but what i will say- is truly study your heart and fully study whatever church you choose to join- the people being nice won't ensure your salvation. You need to choose something that you feel is right-not because the members will mow your lawn and bring you cookies. I will tell you though the change it has made in my life. I have never felt so complete since i accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ. i was raised mormon but didn't go after i turned 18 to rebel against my parents. I didn't return until 3 miserable years later. I always knew the truth- i just didnt' want to put the effort into it. And my life was trial after trial. It wasn't until someone who was not mormon (my boyfriend at the time) said that i would never be happy until i went back to church, that the light bulb came on. My life has been wonderful ever since. Sure it still has it's up's and downs, but there is a peace in my life that i have never experienced before. It is so hard to describe, but it has made me the happiest person and i am TRULY blessed. I love the gospel!! hopefully you will find something that will give you the peace- good luck~:)

WOW! After reading these 'Christian' answers I can see why you are having your dilemma.
GOOD GRIEF PEOPLE!
Mormons are great people. You will hear a ton of junk about them from the haters.
RUMORS:
1. polygamists
2. Adam is God
3. Satan is Jesus' brother
4. Mormons are not Christians
etc.
ALL OF THESE ARE LIES!!!!
I joined for the same reason as your question. I would hear people holding their bible in one hand and point their judge mental finger at someone with their other hand. Go to an LDS website and look around. You will feel peace in your heart.
PS. The person who talks about witnesses is WRONG. Anyone who has opened a Book of Mormon can see a testimony of 3 witnesses. Also a testimony of 12 witnesses. See how these hateful rumors circulate?!

I am a Christian, and I sure respect the Mormons and the LDS teaching.
I believe, there are more important things to consider in joining a church. Know what and why you believe.
The mistake of one or two Christians, or even a hundred Christians, will not make the Gospel unreal. Seek God's guidance.

I think you should do whatever you feel is right. This isn't a question be decided my asking people on yahoo answers. You need to decide what you want in life, and kneel down and pray. Have you received the missionary discussions, if I encourage that you try them. I am sure by the time you finish the discussions, read the book of mormon, and pray you will have an answer you can feel confident in.

I am sorry you have become so disillusioned. It is easy to think the Mormons are on the right track. Many of them are very decent people, and they are very family oriented. But you need to listen to some of the other folks who answered your question. The Mormon teachings are doctrinally incorrect, because they distort the teaching of the scripture. They have added to the Bible with the book of Mormon, which is supposedly 'another gospel'. There are books out there that will give you good information about the fallacies of Mormon theology. Just because they seem to be non-judgmental, doesn't make them correct.
You have most likely come up against a lot of immature, baby Christians who don't realize that Jesus didn't come to condemn everybody, and it's not their job to do it for Him. Try talking to some mature Christian believers, who have studied the Word and have a level head. I have found that those who are young in Christ seem to think they know everything and can solve the problems of the world by pointing fingers, but they are still children. They do not truly represent the whole of Christ's church. A good pastor can help you understand why many Christians act this way.
Also, don't allow the differences between denominations be a stumbling block. As long as they agree on the major doctrines, like the resurrection, the virgin birth, the return of Christ, salvation through faith, the need for baptism, and the Bible being the word of God, the minor differences are only men's opinions to which we can give them freedom in their beliefs.

Good on you! But before you do anything pray and think about what you are choosing. And not all christians are bad, I have several fundamentalist christian friends that accept me even if they don't accept my beliefs. Theologists are the people that you should watch out for. They justify their hatred saying that they are doing it for the lord even if it means lying.
