I have a 10 yr. old female Chow/Shih-tzu mix that weighs around 23 lbs. For the past year or two, about every other month her stomach starts to growl alot (usually happens late at night--it lasts for about a couple of hours) and when that happens she usually doesn't eat. Well, about a year ago, I took her to a family friend who was a vet and he said she had tapeworms (which a dog can get from having fleas) which were making that noise. He gave me medicine for it, but it didn't really work. So now I'm with a different vet, and a about a month ago the vet told me that he thought that she might have some fleas so he gave me some flea medicine for her----recently I have found a flea on her which I removed (she is on a flea treatment). So now I don't know if she has tapeworms again or if there is some other reason why a dog's stomach growls?

Usually when her stomach does growl, I offer her food and she doesn't eat. So, I don't think it's a hunger issue with her.

My dog's stomach does the same thing and he would actually not eat. He has acid stomach - just like people. Talk to your vet about the appropriate meds. You can get certain human acid reducing medicines - but you should discuss it with your vet first.

My dog's stomach growls in the morning - and it gurgles so loudly you can hear it from across the room. Try calling hte vet and asking about acid reducing meds for the dog. That may help.

You have several questions here. Are tapeworms (or other parasites) transmitted by fleas? Do tapeworms cause a dog's stomach to growl? Does a growling stomach mean the dog is hungry?

I'll start with the growling stomach first. Think about yourself. What's going on when your stomach growls? Are you hungry? or are you full and digesting a big meal? If you offer the dog food and she doesn't eat, my guess would be you are hearing the digestion process.

As for the parasites, there are different kinds that can be transmitted by various means. Why don't you stop at your local library and check out a home vet for dogs book and read up on the things that might affect your dog? You can learn about fleas, about worms, and maybe even about growling stomachs.

It sounds like indigestion, just like people dogs stomach make noises when they digest food or are feeling ill. I fail to see how fleas will make a dogs stomach growl. Have you checked her stool for worms? Sometimes dogs will get worms and this will make their stomach growl. I would suggest finding a different vet and possibly taking in a stool sample for him to check out. In the sample he can find out if there are worms present or what is bothering her stomach. Sometimes as dogs age they get ulcers and other stomach ailments just as humans do. It can be something she eats that makes her stomach noisy or it can be gas. I would suggest having a work up done on her stomach and intestines from your vet. This could be more than a case of worms or fleas. It could be a long term health issue since it keeps returning.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8Va

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Could just be digestion, my stomach growls randomly too!

As for the fleas and tapeworm - what treatment is she on? Frontline, Advantage an Revolution are all great for fleas, but none kill tapeworm, you need a complete veterinary wormer for those, like Drontal or Milbemax.
