My daughter is 11, and when she comes home from school, I always find her snacking on things like chips, cookies, icecream.. unhealthy stuff.
What's something that I can buy her that is healthy?
I used to buy her yogurt, but she's sick of that now.
Any ideas?

Grapes, oranges, peaches, pears, bananas, raisins, and apples are all snacks that are used in our home. I also keep small whole wheat crackers, pretzels and cheese on hand. Popcorn is another low calorie snack we eat here too. I purchase the baked chips for special occasions or bake my own potato chips from fresh potatoes. The last is a big job but a favorite treat for all.

stop buying the junk food, and stock up on 'healthy" food.

For a period I had to buy the small individual size bags of chips for my kids. this allows my kids to have chips, but not the whole full size bag. It was a way for me to control the portion and monitor how much they were eating. (ie 1 bag a day, if they ate all 7 in 1 day.. they didnt have anymore till I went to the store again)

veggies with low fat ranch dip
low fat ice creak / frozen yogurt
granola bars
yogurt with granola
sunflower seeds / nuts
celery & peanut butter
fresh fruit or fruit cups for portion control
cheese and crackers
pretzels
frozen grapes are fun treat on a hot day too


I would also remove the soda and pop as those are high in sugar and just empty calories that lead to obesity, tooth decay and metabolic syndrome. ( diabietis)

give her 1 day or snack a week where she can splurg. so your not always the "mean ole mom"

Well, the best way to attract a kid's appetite is making the food look fun and presentable. I think carrot sticks and ranch, celery and peanutbutter are both great nutritional snacks, or a festive fruit salad. Just make it look colorful and fresh. Cereal bars, nuts, trail mix and such work well too.

You can buy bran crackers that are very good. They come in different flavors. They are good for you, taste good, and are just like eating a chip.

You could also make her a fruit smoothie using V8 fusion. Great taste and a full serving of veggies and fruit!

I think 11 is an age that she can know what is good and what is not . So tell her ,why snacking on things like that can be harmful and if she go on doing so ,what she will look like. And also tell her what kind of food is good .I believe she will understand.

I think lots of simple carbohydrates make you hungrier and sleepier so I go for the protein/fat with some complex carbs

string cheese, cheddar cheese cubes, sour cream dip with cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, carrots or (horrors) broccoli, cream cheese with celery, organic pb with apples, nuts - almonds, walnuts, macadamias, summer sausage slices or cubes, flat bread and cold cut rolls, brie with fruit, etc.

If you don't want her to eat the junk, don't buy it. Have fruit & vegetables cut up and ready for her to eat when she gets home. Kids like junk food though, so if it's there she'll eat it.

Don't buy her healthy crud! Kids don't like that. Just let her get fat as a pig and then eat her on a philly cheese steak sandwitch. its actually quite good.
