A righteous person, the soul & spirit leaves the body and goes to be with the Lord, and the unrighteous, goes to the underworld where it stays until the day of judgement.

The Apostle Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
I think our spirit/soul goes to be with the Lord. At the Rapture our bodies are resurrected into an new incorruptible body like Jesus has.

My spirit will go to a place where all of my loved ones and pets that have passed before me are waiting. We rejoice over the life we have lived and pass on our own personal lessons before we are returned to the physical world or celebrate in a place of wonder depending on if we have learned the proper lessons from life.
My Body and the energy that makes my physical life will be returned to the earth to provide energy for new life, including the bacteria and protozoa that will feed upon my remains and process it into elements and nutrients to feed plants and put me back into the food chain.
We are imortal physically and spiritualy. You cannot destroy matter, energy or spirit. So we remain alive even after our current vessels expire.

Spirit refers to the "breath of life". Soul is the result of body plus spirit. When God created Adam, he formed him from the dust of the earth, breathed into him the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul. When a person dies, the breath of life goes back to God who gave it, and the body returns to dust, and the soul dies or ceases to exist. It's like taking boards and nails and making a box. Take the nails out of the boards and the boards fall apart....you have nails and boards again. Where is the box? It ceases to exist.

Any hallucinations in that direction, if I had any which I don't, would surely die with me. "Spiritual", for me, means a sense of connection with all other. It requires a mind, and thought, and imagination - all of which require a brain functioning beyond doctrine, dogma, and prescribed preconceptions. When that goes, I go. Nowhere, like any other animal. Suits me OK. The rest is hubris.

Just like a flame can not exist without fuel, the 'soul' (our mental identity) can not exist without the chemical reactions that fuel us. Our 'soul' is not separate from us but the sum total of us. It is the essence of the idea that we are more than the sum of our parts. When the parts cease to function then our flame fades out.

when you switch on an electricity bulb it illuminates....what happens after you switch off??? where does the electricity go?
in the ON state, that is, LIVING electricity is used by the bulb...here electricity acts as the spirit or the soul..
in the OFF state that represents DEAD the electricity may be used by another appliance, say a fan, inferring that spirit or soul continuously changes from one form to another (human or animal ) which is termed as REINCARNATION or REBIRTH.

Nothing. A persons spirit or "soul" is just your brain. When your brain ceases to function, so do you.
