Our cats do the same thing. The first thing we do is scoop the litter several times a week if possible. We also sprinkle some standard fridge baking powder on top. It helps keep it fresh. You may want to consider changing your litter. We use Arm and Hammer. It's been the best for the odor.

If your cats are a bit bigger or they just like to flip litter you may want to get a larger, deeper pan. We took an old area rug and put under it pan too. You can sometimes find these at yard sales or the salvation army. They're expensive new!

Good luck!

lol! I fondly call my kitty a flinger. Heck with the fur flying, it's a shower of litter. I have a large box with a detachable rim on it as others have described to help catch of the excess, but some days the litter makes an escape over and out. A mat from the pet store really helped reduce the litter tracks. The cat doesn't like the sound of my vacuum cleaner so I found a cheap electric broom that does the trick to pickup the litter and trails. She doesn't mind it at all, she'll even sit nearby and watch me work, as if she's the supervisor making sure I do a good job.

I didn't go with a covered box as it can keep the smell in and it's just one more thing I'd have to deal with when I scoop or clean the box. Scoop daily and change the litter as needed depending upon the type of litter you use and the number of cats in the house. If the box stinks, other than just after kitty makes a fresh deposit, it's probably past time to clean it. You can let your nose be your guide. You'll get to know how often the litter needs to be changed based on experience and then make it a routine to avoid getting to the stinky stage.

Good luck!

I use a litter box with a detachable "barrier" around it. Not a covered litter box, it's just a ring that snaps around the top of the regular litter box. It reduces (but doesn't completely eliminate) the amount of litter that gets flung out. Also, I have tried many brands of litter, and Fresh Step seems to be the very best for odor control. Special Kitty (Wal-mart) brand was horrible for odor control, Arm & Hammer was better, but not great. So I definately recommend the Fresh Step. Also, any cat (as with humans) will "stink up the place" when they poop, even if the waste is immediately covered. My suggestion for that is to spray air freshener (as humans do) or do what I did and buy an Airwick Freshmatic to put in the same room with the litter box. It will spray automatically throughout the day so you don't have to remember to. But don't put it too close to the litter box. I learned that the hard way when it went off while my cat was in the middle of "doing her thing". It scared her and poop and litter went flying everywhere. Hilarious, but a nasty mess to clean!

Hope this helps!

Depending on how many cats you have, you may need 2 litter boxes...They tend to look for an unused spot to do their potty and then need room to Bury it...(the burying, covers most of the "stink" up especially if you use a good litter. I bought some cheaper stuff and threw it away!!
If you buy "Fresh Step" it actually smells much better..... Try to keep it cleaned out at least every other day.
As far as clean up ~ I keep the litter box on the basement floor and keep a broom & dust pan close by. I don't bother with carpet or mats cuz that's just another thing I'd have to drag it upstairs and outside to shake all the time.
Well ~ hope this helps.....

You need to buy more than one litter box if you have more than 2 cats and make sure you buy the covered boxes. They tend to help keep the smell down. Another thing you can do is buy multi-cat brand cat litters. Most of the time they have extra deodorizers in them. One more thing you can do is buy one of those self cleaning boxes. They sweep the mess away into a bag that you pick up later.
Be sure to scoop you litter box once a day for sanitary reasons. Cats like a clean box and alot of times if you don't keep the box clean, they try to get rid of waste themselves by scooping it out with their paws, or just do their business beside the box or some other less pleasant place.

Get and enclosed litter box...that should help cut down on the amount of litter mess. For the smell change the box every week or 2. Try mixing some baking powder in with the litter when you put new litter in.

Another option: stop feeding your cat any food or water...the problem will take care of itself in a couple of weeks. Just kidding LOL!

1) Use enough litter boxes to keep things from getting stinky quickly - you need at least one litter box for each cat.

2) Use a scoopable clumping litter so you can clean out and discard the clumps of wet litter and poop twice daily. That will keep the boxes from getting stinky.

3) Use a litter box with high sides (you can find them in pet stores), or use an 18-gallon plastic storage box and cut a hole in the side for the cats to climb in & out - this will cut down on the cats scattering litter on the floor when they dig in the box and bury their waste.

4) Use a litter-catching mat at each litterbox - you can find them at the pet store (make sure to get one that won't hurt the cats' paws, or they won't use the box), or use a textured carpet to catch the litter the cats track from the box, and shake it out regularly.

Hope this helps!

i have 3 cats and my litter box does not smell that often. i use "arm & hammer cat box litter control". its in the cat stuff isle. its really good. get a litter box either with a lid, meaning the ones that looks like they are going into a cave.haha. or get one that has a kind of lip. and make sure it is a bigger one. use only scoopable litter. and scoop it everyday and you will not have anymore smell. they will still make a mess on the floor. but thats cats for you!!lol

I put an old towel under my kitties litter box and whenever i clean the litter I just pick up the towel and put the fallen litter in the garbage bag too. The towel helps with the first initial step that has litter all over it and and catches the litter that she flings everywhere because apparently she thinks she can dig to china in that thing. :) Good luck!

I have a VERY large litter box (about 12 inches high), with litter cover just the bottom. I also have it setting on indoor/outdoor carpeting. They're still messy & I have to clean up after them every day.
