Do you actually have any idea? I am a student in highschool, and at lunch time, I was almost surprised of how many people smoked from grade 9-12. There is about 35-40% of kids who smoke, and I am not joking.

Parents of highschoolers, did you know this?

Hi Joe,

Wow, what an eye-opener, I had no idea that many smoked! Why do you think so many kids smoke? That must be hard to eat your food with all those smokers around you.

I'd say that large percentage is surprising mostly because:

#1) Smoking is generally not as socially acceptable these days. Less areas permit it, especially in public places. I'm also surprised there are still schools that allow smoking on school property. Plus, kids are supposedly encouraged to resist peer pressure & "just say no" to doing substances they don't want to do.

#2) Cigarettes are not easy for kids to get due to laws prohibiting minors from buying cigarettes and kids in general do not have as much money as adults do (smoking can become a very expensive habit.)

#3) People are overall more health-conscience, & medical evidence clearly shows how detrimental smoking is to one's health. Smoking continues to be the #1 worse thing you can do your body.

There were lots of smokers back when I attended high school too (1970's) but the rules & the political climate were a bit different then. If anything, I would have guessed that the numbers of smokers would have decreased over the years. I must say I'm disappointed to find out it has not improved much. Do you think that kids at other schools smoke as much as the ones at your school?

Thanks for sharing that info w/ us parents, & I hope you can rise above the smokers, and do something good for your body instead :)

i did cuz im in highschool. actually i go to a private christian highschool and its still about 1/3 of the kids who smoke. but i found that highschool kids actually have a lot more will power than adults to quit when they want tho. a lot of my friends just decided to stop, so they did. no problems. it weird that adults have such a hard time doing the same.

p.s. i dont smoke, but i know alot of kids that do/did

Actually, while our father and mother had been our age, there have been plenty extra prime schoolers that smoked. I characteristic this to the truth that now not so much used to be recognized, as is understood now, approximately the hazards of smoking. As for in the event that they realize precisely what number of smoke now - I'm definite they do not have genuine data (no less than, they have not memorized them). But, I do not consider they care approximately data. They do not care who smokes, and what number of smoke - they simply wish to be certain THEIR little one does not smoke. Why does your institution permit pupils to smoke at lunch? The sizeable majority of prime schoolers are more youthful than the authorized smoking age. Also, your 35-forty% of pupils smoking evaluation is flawed. No, I do not cross on your institution, however there are surveys publicized approximately the smoking conduct of persons, and the outcome don't exhibit this percent of persons smoking.

http://islam.about.com/religion/islam/library/weekly/aa090600a.htm

Most Muslims are aware of and try to avoid the major sins in Islam -
murder, suicide, adultery, alcohol, gambling, usury, etc. Muslims are
forbidden to harm themselves or others. Yet millions of Muslims all
over
the world are doing just that - harming, even killing themselves and
their
families. Islamic scholars have historically had mixed views on the
subject, and the actions of these Muslims have not been unanimously
forbidden or even discouraged.

The danger is tobacco use - cigarette and cigar smoking, chew, etc.
The
mixed views on the subject came about because cigarettes are a more
recent
invention and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an
in
the 7th century A.D. Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an or
words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying clearly that
"Cigarettee smoking is forbidden." However, there are many instances
where the Qur'an gives us general guidelines, and calls upon us to use
our
reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from Allah about what is
right
and wrong. In the Qur'an, Allah says, ...he [the Prophet] commands
them
what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful
what
is good, and prohibits them from what is bad..." (Surah al-Araf 7:157).
So what are the evils of tobacco use, for your health and for your deen
(religion)?

my high school is very small and nobody is really all that bad. it's a big deal when somebody gets in-school suspension. maybe a lot of people smoke, but i don't think so. that might just be because i'm an honors nerd and on the cross country team though...

Not at my high school. At least they aren't stupid enough to do it out in the open. As long as your kids are responsible enough to stay out of the wrong crowd then they can go through their education without being afftected by the smokers at all.
