Why is this?

Yeah, I've been dieting and walking for an over a day for the past 5 days, but I'm still gaining. It's kind of depressing.

Not really. It depends on what you are doing.
If you start working out (weigh training and cardio) you might gain and keep gaining muscle and then start losing fat but not necessarily - you might also not lose fat at all if not eating right.
If you "diet" by depriving yourself you lose water weight and muscle and slow down metabolism and then gain it all back because you are not able to keep depriving yourself for the rest of your life. But not all people lose when depriving their bodies - some just gain (usually older women and I do as well)

If you're adding exercise as a part of your plan to loose weight then yes, cuz before you can loose wait for some reason you start to build up muscle first and that weighs more.

Ive never heard of that happening. When loseing weight, there sholdnt be any gain eriod, weather its working out, or changing your food habits. You should check out what your eating and make some changes, or maybe become a little more active
