The Navy ball is a formal occasion so formal dresses are the norm. Although I've seen the occasional pant suit, that has to be pretty dressy to do well.

In addition to the shopping places others have mentioned I'll add check your second hand shops. Around here we have at least 1 that sells designer seconds and several that specialize in wedding/formal wear.

But the dress I got the most compliments on ever I found when I went into Goodwill on a whim...$18, floor length, red...I paid more for the shoes than the dress.

The Balls are usually the most formal affair. Since the Sailor is going to be wearing his "military issue tux" then the wife should dress accordingly. A ball gown is good, but doesn't have to be too extravagant. Go to your local mall, Dillards, Macy's, even TG Max and Marshalls, should have "prom" dresses. That's what I always tell the younger wives in my hubbie's squadron to wear.... Navy Ball, AF Ball, etc... it's the military prom.

formal, floor length(nothing shorter than Tea length) no slits up to the thigh or necklines plunging to the navel. Tasteful hair and makeup, no 4 inch stillettos. How you look is a reflection on your Sailor.

Ours is tonight. I have a floor length royal blue gown with a jacket that has a sprinkling of rhinestones along the hem.
