As you gave your list, it sounded as if you were referring to four different spirits while you were asking about different "aspect"s of the same spirit (I think). Just thought I would point that out.

1) I do not know if the scriptures that you give on anointing refer to an act of the spirit or the revealed word.

If you look at the entire chapter you will see a basic topic emerging. This is that Christians should guard themselves against false teachers.

In a time when there was no organized Bible it was easy for a person to make claims about Jesus and be believed by those around them. Here (1 John 2:27) John is telling Christians that they don't need to listen to the teachings of a man unless those teachings are also taught by their "anointing".

This anointing (chrisma in the Greek) may refer to an act of the spirit or it may refer to either what an apostle had told them or even what can be found in the old testament. In any case, it refers to a knowledge that was bestowed on them by the holy one.

On a side note, these two verses are the only places here the word chrisma is found in the entire Bible. Other references to anointing in the New Testament use the Greek words aleipho, murizo, chrio, epichrio, and egchrio.

2) To seal something was a way of keeping things shut (as the tomb of Christ had a seal put on it to keep the disciples out and letters were sealed to keep prying eyes out).

The way this worked was that the seal showed who had done the sealing and if anyone dared disturb it, they would have to deal with the sealer. There was no way to open a seal without damaging it.

God seals his children so that anyone trying to get in (aka Satan) knows who he has to deal with if he tries. So it is a sign of ownership and promise of protection. This seal is the Holy Spirit.

3) The term pledge is the Greek arrhabon, which means a part of sum of money or property given in advance as security. As you read the verses surrounding 2 Cor 5:5 you will see that Paul has been talking about the fact that we long for the body and world that we will receive in the end. The Spirit stands to tide us over and support us until we receive the fullness of our inheritance.

4) Inheritance ties into the pledge. The Holy Spirit is not our inheritance put a pledge of it (as I said above). Our inheritance is the perfect body, new heaven and new earth, and fully restored relationship with God. We will receive this at the "redemption of the purchased possession" (which is us).

I hope this helped.

May God guide you and bless you all your days and may he make you a blessing to others.

1 John 2:20;27-Every true believer has the "Anointing" of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit abides permanently to help us ascertain if what we are hearing is scriptural or not.
2 Cor 1:22- A seal of ownership, this presents a guarantee that God will ultimately give us the balance of all He has promised, which Jesus paid for at the cross.
2 Cor 5:5- God has given us the earnest or the firstfruit of the Spirit as a guarantee that we will be resurrected and put on immortality.
Eph 1:13-14-The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption. Sonship through this phase of the Spirit in the life of the believer is like a down payment (like earnest money) with a guarantee that our inheritance will come at the resurrection.

I'd like a Minnesota Twins 2011 World Series Championship. I recognize that present might be approximately 10 months overdue, but it surely'd be valued at the wait! Failing that (and assuming the Vikings don't seem to be going to win some thing this yr both), I'd be blissful with a few tickets to a couple of video games. It's my target to visit video games in all 30 MLB towns, and up to now I've best been to SF, Oakland, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. I'm hoping to make it to D.C. and Baltimore subsequent spring or summer time. So for those who men wish to chip in and get me a present, there may be an thought. I'll promise to behave amazed!

I don't have a Bible handy but the answer is always the same. the Holy Spirit is The Holy Spirit. He convicts us so that we repent and turn to him. He fills us to seal us and so that we know we are his. NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT FROM YOU!
He empowers us so that we can be bold witnesses for Him.
And, what better inheritance could there be in existence, than to know you are known by the Living God!
This is salvation. This is eternal life now and in the life to come. Rejoice in it!

Galations 5:22-23 is my favorite RUACH HAKODESH/
HOLY SPIRIT scripture.
if we deny the SPIRIT of ADONAI, HE is not with us. if we
deny YESHUA is the Messiah, we are with the anti-christ.
the seal of YESHUA is the RUACH HAKODESH. the
SPIRIT is ours through YESHUA only!!!
( the RUACH HAKODESH is My Spiritual Teacher.)
ADONAI pledged us this, the RUACH HAKODESH.
( for without the SPIRIT we can't grow!)
without the RUACH HAKODESH we cannot come into
our promise of eternal life.
Thank You Warrior Bride! what a gift on Shabbat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a·noint (ə-noint') Pronunciation Key
tr.v. a·noint·ed, a·noint·ing, a·noints

a To apply oil, ointment, or a similar substance to.
b To put oil on during a religious ceremony as a sign of sanctification or consecration.
c To choose by or as if by divine intervention.

After reading all the surrounding verses, I feel that John uses the term anointing in reference to recieveing the teachings of Jesus with regard to the truth: Specifically 1 John 2: 20,27 and surrounding verses do not mention the Holy Spirit, rather Christ's teachings regarding the truth.

For instance 1 John:
2:24 As for you, what you have "heard" from the beginning "must remain 51 in you". If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

Although anointing usually refers to oil, in this context John is refering to being anointed with the message of Jesus, which came from the Father.

As I understand it, the word of God allows the soul to grow spiritually and mature into an attractive home for her, the Holy Spirit.

The sealing Spirit -2 Cor 1:22
1:21 But it is God who establishes 39 us together with you in Christ and who anointed us, 40 1:22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment. 41

**Again we see the word ''anointed''. Clearly Paul is inspired directly by John's words here and adding his own commentary. Interestingly in Eph 1:13 being anointed and recieving the seal of the spirit are clearly delineated.

The verses 2 Cor 5:5

. 5:5 Now the one who prepared us for this very purpose 9 is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment

**Reading the surrounding text I notice that Paul again quotes early texts (Gospel of Philip and Thomas)
----------------------------------------------
"For instance excerpts from The Gospel of Philip:
Some are afraid lest they rise naked. Because of this they wish to rise in the flesh, and they do not know that it is those who wear the flesh who are naked. It is those who choose to unclothe themselves who are not naked. "Flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (similar to 1 Co 15:50). What is this which will not inherit? This which is on us. But what is this, too, which will inherit? It is that which belongs to Jesus and his blood. Because of this he said "He who shall not eat my flesh and drink my blood has not life in him" (similar to Jn 6:53). What is it? His flesh is the word, and his blood is the Holy Spirit. He who has received these has food and he has drink and clothing. I find fault with the others who say that it will not rise. Then both of them are at fault. You say that the flesh will not rise. But tell me what will rise, that we may honor you. You say the Spirit in the flesh, and it is also this light in the flesh. (But) this too is a matter which is in the flesh, for whatever you shall say, you say nothing outside the flesh. It is necessary to rise (in spiritual maturity) in this flesh, since everything exists in it. In this world, those who put on garments are better than the garments. In the Kingdom of Heaven, the garments are better than those that put them on."
------------------------------------
Philip thus refers to the nature of the mortal body being temporary, and that those who are saved will inherit an eternal body. These passages surrounding verses 5:5 (1-5) are Gnostic in nature and show that Paul clearly appreciated some aspects of the works that were later labelled as heretical by those whom worshiped Paul. What is interesting about this verse 5:5 is that it states that God gave the Spirit as a down payment or first installment from birth. Yet to have communion with the Holy Spirit within, one must internalize the word of God (become anointed), and also prove a purification has occured by showing willingness to sacrifice ownership over material possesions (like Jesus and Abraham).

For instance: 2 Cor 5:10 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, 16 so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil. 17"

**Therefore it follows that the rest of the payment must be assured through sacrificing one's material desires/possesions in service to God in order to assure recieving the remaining payment required to obtain a spiritual house.

The seal of the Holy Spirit comes to those whom have accepted God the Father as owner of everything through the penance of sacrificing one's mortal desires to God. Therefore things should happen if God wills them only.

What might interest you Sandy (if you haven't heard it before lol) is Vedic beliefs concerning the Holy Spirit (which they call the supersoul). Vaisnavite and Shiivite Hindu's hold that the Holy Spirit is within every living being from birth. H/S Hindu's believe that the Holy Spirit witnesses and remembers all one's thoughts and actions (to bear witness to one's decisions and actions). They hold that the Holy Spirit resides in un believers at the base of the spine (about the spot where Chinese believe chi exists).

Upon spiritual development, H/S Hindu's believe that the Holy Spirit moves gradually up the spine and with the soul's full realization, the spirit chooses to reside with the soul in the seat of the soul (ie the brain). Therefore they hold that liberation brings the Holy Spirit and the soul to union, when the soul harmonizes itself with God.

The christian belief in being sealed with the spirit seems to match Hindu belief concerning liberation.
I wonder if similar belief's were held by the Sumarians, Egyptians and by modern day Sufi's?
