If you think it is, what would you recommend for a family with two young children?

It certainly is still appropriate, and I hope that it never isn't. It makes people feel so much more welcome when they know that their neighbors are kind and considerate people. I would reccomend some kind of homeade food, such as a pie, or cake or something. That's what I remeber my mother always doing.

It depends, if you are in a house then it is normal etiquette, but if you are in an apartment then it is a little unusual. However, no mater where you are it would be a good and polite idea.

Food is the generic gift that can be used by anyone or any family. A cake, a basket of fruit, some home made cookies would all be nice gifts. You don't have to spend a lot of money all you want to do is say, hi and welcome to the neighborhood. You may also want to include an invite to dinner some time, if you have favorable first impressions of the family.

Wine may not be proper, are they Mormons?
Anything made with peanut butter wouldn't be a good idea either unless you know that the children are not allergic to them.
A gift certificate to your favorite restaurant isn't a bad idea, but then how much thought and effort went into that compared to a home made cake, brownies, or cookies? If you don't bake then it would be a good idea, but baking those from a box mix is pretty simple, cheap and shows some thought and effort.

Manners of old are quickly disappearing. You have a lovely thought. The people I knew took a dish of food for the family in a container that was left as the gift. It's hard to know what to do these days because people are so funny. How about a basket filled with good coffee, maybe coffee mugs and packaged food items that are appropriate for all members of the family. Wrap the gift in gift cellophane and put a big bow on it.

Yes, yes, yes! I have a friend that moved several miles from me, almost 10 years ago and she still can not believe that no one welcomed her in any way. I moved here about the same time and my neighbors brought food gifts. It is always appropriate to be kind and welcoming.

Yes! Kindness is always accepted.

A little basket is fun to put together. Here are some ideas of what to put in it: a map, chocolate, bubbles, home baked gift (pie, cookies), plant, cute hand soaps.. Have fun!

I think it would be great. A pie, a cake. A bottle of wine. A box of chocolates. If they are new to the entire area, a gift certificate to a fovorite restaurant of yours.

Homemade Apple Pie. I got that from a neighbor when I moved and man that was the best pie ever.

Sure! Very nice. If they have two kids - what about a book about moving or friendship. Or maybe something like a kids guide to your city if one exists.

Of course it is appropriate! Don't buy anything too expensive or extravagent. Food is common and totally acceptable.
