My hubby is American and i am German . The whole process took about a year .We married in the USA and then i went back to Germany to wait for the Visa . It could have been faster but our petition took place in Texas .Texas and California are States where you have to wait longer because of the mexican border ( lot more immigrants ).
The process was long but not awfull because the Americans are very polite people . Also in the Embassys :). If you need info's how to start , send me an email and i help as good as i can .
Ahh , and i just came recently to the USA (2006 ).
I add the link from the USCIS , because here you gonna find all your forms (so you can download them ).

You also find there "step by step " advices . The US-Embassy Website in India will also be helpfull , because there you find instructions for Indian people .

My husband came to the US from England for three months. He went home for a month, then came back and was told at customs that he was spending too much time in the US and wouldn't be allowed back in if he went back and tried to return. After talking the immigration and the embassy, the only way he would be able to stay was if we got married..so we did. That was 7 years ago.

It wasn't that terrible once we got the ball rolling. It did take over a year, but that was before 9.11. Waiting in the Immigration office was probably the worst of it. Most of the officers were nice. The last person who interviewed us was retiring and even shared some stories from his career.

I think the process is what you make of it. If you go to all the meetings/ appointments together, you can make it fun.

Good luck!

It is usually a traumatic experience and leaves you drained. But apart from this consider the Cultrual aspect that is what usually contributes to a failure.Talking on the internet for months is not Love you need time with the person before even considering Marriage.Words you dont want to hear but people will resort to anything to get a residence Visa, think carefully.Think you are British in which case the trolley man at ASDA fancies you to bits and you ignore him because of your obsession with your Intl friend.
