Cable companies not only have to pay for the programming they carry, but they also have to pay HUGE amounts of money to install, maintain, and upgrade their infrastructure. They usually have to run cable to EVERY house, regardless of whether that house is their customer or not. That's the downside to having a regional monopoly.

But most people who complain about the price of their bill aren't subscribers to Basic Cable; they tend to subscribe to lots of PREMIUM services. Those have always come at a PREMIUM.

My advice is to do some research on DirecTV or DishNetwork. The satellite providers offer better TV service for less money compared to most cable systems. The downside is that they can't directly provide other services (cable or phone), as sat technology doesn't lend itself well for those uses. In many areas, they partner with other companies to provide those services.

Cable companies carry contracts with each channel that is carried in the lineup; most of these channels renegotiate their cost yearly. This cost is then built into the cost of the customer. If you have advanced services ( digital, premiums) there are usually options to package them together to save money. Cable companies also have agreements with local boroughs and/or municipalities meaning they put money back into the community where dish services do not. This helps to keep your local taxes down.

It costs so much because cable companies usually have a monopoly in their specific area. Ever notice how you can't sign up with any other cable service? Since they have no direct competition they can charge pretty much what they want.

I don't know. You would think that cable companies would pay us to watch some of that crap.
