It is amazing that the first thoughts are about terrorism or commerce not that they are bad for the environment. There was a study of the atmosphere after W grounded all planes in North America after 9/11and if memory serves it was found that the contrails of jets reduced the amount of sunlight hitting the earth. I work in the aviation industry and it pays the mortgage of which I am quite happy to take their dirty money.

OK so what would happen if they stopped flying planes well mostly nothing. Business communication has evolved beyond the pony express and telegraph, you can get someone on the phone just about anywhere in the world any time of day. Documents can be sent by fax, e-mail or heck even the post office so really commerce will continue along quite happily without the planes. What will take a little longer is travel, people will have to use the train or boat. My parents traveled in the 1950s by boat to several countries.

I think the world might be a little slower and maybe a little better without planes, well maybe after MY mortgage is paid off

The very concept of civilisation will be destroyed, apart from the mass disruption of movement of people and goods and the end of an era which has seen the world progress so much. It will also destroy a huge and established aircraft and travel industry, which, apart from providing mass employment is a good source of revenue for the countries concerned.

Civilisation is the breaking down of barriers and borders and encouraging the free movement of people. It can progress with easing restrictions rather than cutting down the means.

Currently, we do not see any major problems facing the airline industry. Safety is improving every day and the other threats are being handled and taken care of very thoroughly.

I had no idea that airplanes were a problem. I suppose that cars would be more problematic than planes since more people die from car accidents than planes. If you refer to terrorism, you are barking at the wrong tree. The planes are innocent, its the idiots that hijack them.
Can you stop from breeding terrorism, probably no, but airplanes do so much more good (in the zillion category) than the potential for terrorism.

Who said there was a problem with planes? If your talking about terrorism, that wont do anything. Terrorists would just completely more car bombs, suicide bombers and planting bombs on places like trains/subways and so fourth.

Besides, restricting air travel would bring the economy to a complete standstill.

There is nothing wrong with planes. Commercial air travel is the safest mode of transportation. And has only been getting safer. Who said there was a problem?

I can not believe you would even suggest that. Why don't we stop making cigarettes since we all know they cause problems. I don't smoke so what do I care. But.... maybe you do, I do not know. Why don't we stop making cars since people have accidents in them all the time. Please, use your brain. Besides the above arguments how about giving in to the crazy terrorists. Do you feel like letting them run the world, NOT ME
Good Luck to you!

Because people want to go to other countries. If you have a problem with the hazards then dont fly. Its that simple.

If one were to order the cancelation of manufartoring aircraft, major copmanies like Boeing and Airbus would go out of business and all the airlines of the world would also go bust. Another major point is that we wouls loose the safest way to travel, statisticly speaking. not to mention that hundered of thousands of people would be out of jobs. that aint cool if you no what i mean.

Because that would be destructive to civilization. If people are going to terrorize, there are hundreds of ways to do it. Stopping planes won't stop terrorism.
