Can you take off a permanent retainer at any time? And how long will i have to wear it?

PERMANENT HAS MANY ADVANTAGES OVER REMOVABLE.
THESE CANNOT BE REMOVED, HENCE THEIR NAME.
YOU MAY KEEP THESE FOR MANY YEARS WELL INTO ADULTHOOD.

Yes, you do have a choice, but I would get the permanent one! As a dental hygienist I see these all the time. They are great. The wire is placed on the inside of your bottom teeth and will keep your teeth from shifting for years to come. They to cause a lot more tartar (calculus) to build-up though so you'll want to be sure you get some floss threaders.

Removable retainers can get lost, brake easily, and you won't wear it as much as you should. The permanent retainer is what you want. Sometimes they will even put it on the top, but most often just the bottom. The lower teeth shift quickly and move toward the midline of the mouth for the rest of your life. It's just a natural movement and that wire will keep them where they should be.

I hope this helps!
