I'm trying to find a soup kitchen to volunteer for in Long Island. Does anyone know of any soup kitchens that are open this sunday that you can just show up and say "I want to volunteer"? I'm sure there are many of them open on sunday, and everyday, but how do I find one?

There's a lot you can do, esp around the holidays. You can donate to Coats for Kids, volunteer for Meals on Wheels, etc. Call the Salvation Army and ask them what you can do. As a tradition, I love getting those kids from the Giving Trees in the mall and get presents for them. My church group always does their own kind of volunteer work. Once they made fleece hats and scarves and donated them to a women's shelter.
