Failed to start today, but heard a lot of clicking as if the starter was trying to turn the engine over. Have a new battery, so don't believe the problem is there, though it could be the alternator because it has been making a strange noise the past two days. thanks if you can help at all.

NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. Don't change the starter till you have checked the starting system. Check battery voltage, should be 13.5 volts. Check alternator out put, should be 14 to 15 volts. Check starter relay, probably the clicking you heard. Were battery posts and terminals cleaned shiny bright when battery was installed ?? Auto zone or similar store will check these things for you. Doubtful if it's the starter.

Sounds like not enough voltage getting to the starter solenoid try jumpstarting it...make sure there are no loose connections(battery, starter and alternator) if it does start then have the charging system checked a.s.a.p as it may not start back up if you have a dead cell in the battery(but its a new battery so) if it does not start and just "clicks" then I think it would just be the solenoid....the noise in the alternator is probably the bearing going out in it and its not keeping the battery charged if this is so then you may have ruined the battery since they shouldn't be drained that low...hope this helps you out...

Maybe the cable stud on the starter is loose, it's common. Disconnect negative cable from battery, check the positive cable at the starter, make sure the nut on the starter cable stud is tight, but first remove it to make sure the nut that holds the stud in the solenoid is tight. Sometimes the nut loosens and the stud doesn't make a good connection to the solenoid switch plate internally in the solenoid. Careful not too tight, the solenoid switch cover is plastic and will break if over-tightened. Tigten the nut reinstall the cable and accessory feed wires and tighten the cable nut. Inspect the battery cable terminals at the battery, remove any scaley corrosion and reconnect cable. Don't over-tighten the cable bolt or you could damage the side post battery.

Take the battery and alternator to your local Auto Zone parts store and they will check them for you. If they test OK then it has to be the starter. The starter is installed with two bolts and two electrical connections and is fairly simple to replace if you can get the car up off of the ground safely to get under it. The starter looks like two motors mounted together. One smaller than the other.

Since you have a new batt. and since you only hear a "Click" when you trun the key I would bet that your starter is shot, the click you hear is the bendix on the solenoid poping the teeth into the flywheel.

Since the car is not "turning over" it seems the starter is dead, take the starter out and take it to Auto Zone and have them test it.

If its OK then it might be a connection issue, clean where the wires connect to the starter and try again. The people at the auto parts store should fill you in.

Good luck

Check your voltage on your battery. you just changed your battery , that tells me you have been having problems. Have your alt checked out. Check your belts ,if the belt in worn out it will be setting to far into the pulley and will not spin the alt fast enough will driving. make sure that you good connection on your new battery & that your cables end are clean. The alt and starter don't cost that much starter around 49.00 & alt. 39.00 to 49.00 dollars Noise you here is more than likely a bearing or the recterfier- this is where I would start to try and solve your problem. I would start with the alt if you came into the shop its easy to check out. You can remove the alt and have it tested your self if you are handy MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE CABLELS BEFORE YOU REMOVE ANY ELECTRICAL UNIT ON ANY CAR

if you hear a lot of fast clicking, its probably a voltage problem, one click is what a starter will usually do when its going out, try jump starting it, if it starts you have charging problem or a draw, if it doesn't start you may have a starter problem
