Lasers are already in use as targeting devices. The first laser weapons should be operational in about 10 years. There is some concern about them being used to blind opposing forces.

They have laser sights weapon now on some of the M-4 carbine, I actually got the hold one, This captain in the 82nd Airborne showed it to my desk jockey ***.

They have an operational system (prototype) already built but it requires a 747 to fly it. It will continue development but hopefully will never be deployed. You can't count on that in this world.
