As western Europe was never overran by the Soviet Union, I would say yes.

Since NATOs prime mission was to protect Western Europe from an assault by the USSR, I guess it was a success. How it will adapt to its new role has yet to be determined, although their have been some significant successes.

NATO is an idea, not a goal.

Explanations would take too long. Be happy that people smarter than you figured it out a long time ago.

Next time, don't trust that public eduation.
