For military service, I say absolutely not. I am full-time active army, and some of the volunteer soldiers are already more of a burden than a help. I feel that this problem would be far worse if we had a forced conscription, and the resulting poor work ethic of the forced conscripts would keep those soldiers who want to serve too busy picking up the slack to do their regular jobs.
However, I think conscription in a civilian national service is a good idea. I don't think it should be forced, but I feel that it could justly be a prerequisite for one's right to vote. This may seem a little tyrannical, but consider this: If one is going to help decide the future of the country, it's not too much to ask that person should have had a role in helping it grow, rather than sitting on the sidelines and casting their opinion into workings in which they have had no involvement.
The civilian service could be in a variety of roles, from construction and civil works to administrative service to medical or humanitarian work. I think that a year or two of service would be plenty if all able Americans were taking part in it, and the work schedule could be one weekend served per month, like the army reserves, so that it would allow folks to keep their normal careers and stay close to their families.

Goodness NO!
The military doesn't want them, most of them are loosers.
Not kidding. The Army did a study of recruitment last year. They found that 78% of Americans between the ages of 17 and 25 are NOT FIT for military service.
They are either to fat, have been involved in drugs, have medical problems, are to stupid, have criminal convicitons, haven't got a high school diploma, etc.
The Army has a job to do... it can't go nursing these whiny fat dullards around. Neither can the Marines or the Navy or the Air Force.
Let them sit on mommies couch eating cheetos and watching Pokemon.. that's where they belong.

Yes.
Germany conscripts all young men. They have the choice to serve in the Military or in Government service (hospitals, etc.) and to serve 11 months or 21 months.
It drastically cuts government costs and is fair across the board.
America, being a liberated nation, should conscript all young women as well, just to make sure that they receive equal treatment to the men.

No. The draft demoralized the Army during Vietnam. Soldiers become soldiers because that's what they want to do. Keep it a volunteer force.

Well I guess the US could do another draft or draftesque procedure. It doesn't seem very smart money wise considering how many Christians there are in America. I am a Christian, as such I refuse to take sides in political matters. My father even ended up in Prison for refusing the draft. As I understand it, running a prison ain't cheap.
