If you buy a new car, then you will be given a 'Certificate of Origin", not a title. Once you take it to the DMV along with an application for title, you will receive the title in 4-6 weeks.

The exception would be if you live in a state that requires the dealership to process your title work, such as Illinois. If this is the case, then you will receive the title also with in 4-6 weeks.

Since the laws are different for each state, it would be best to ask the dealership if they would send your paperwork to the DMV for you, or if you will have to do it on your own. I hope this helps to clarify.

You will get the application for the title filled out by the dealer. This has to be sent in to the state so that the new title can be issued in your name. When you fill out all the registration information and pay the sales tax, the state will send your title in a week or so.
