Tails, no. When done early it is a minor discomfort that the puppy barely even notices.
Ears, it depends. I am not against it if done by a qualified vet and the ears are properly cared for as they heal. My only problem is more and more people are having whackos crop ears to save a few bucks and a lot of dogs are getting messed up in the process. The only reason I would support a ban on ear cropping is for that reason. Other than that, I feel it is a personal choice. I personally do not crop my Dobie's ears, but I don't mind if another wants to do it responsibly.

Well nobody here has yet mentioned the history behind the breed and why the ears were cropped and the tails were docked to begin with. Herr Louis Debermann was a tax collector in Germany in the late 1800's. He developed this breed to be a protector and companion. The ears and tail were cut so that the dog would not have an apendage for another person to grab on to while he was walking the streets doing his job in the dark at night. I have both bred and shown Dobes for over 20 years, and do not find this to be a painfull or cruel procedure, when done correctly. I personally like the apperance of the dog both docked and cropped, although it is only cosmetic. These days it is really only a choice. All breeders of Dobermans dock the tails. If you get a pup from a show breeder the pups ears will almost always be cropped with a long show crop when you purchase the dog. Whether you get a pup from a reputable breeder for $1500.00 or a pup from a byb for $400.00, the dog will still be the same dog, with or without the docking or cropping. The tail or the ears don't make the dog mean. The bad breeders and bad owners do. I wish you luck and hope you find the Dobie of your dreams. They are very good and loyal familly dogs

I have a Doberman who has had her ears and tail docked. The tails are done a few days after birth. Personally, I don't think a Doberman would look like a Doberman without it being done. Then again, it serves no purpose other then to look good. My Doberman never acted like she knew it was done though, meaning she was always very happy and playful, and for that reason, I don't think it's wrong because it didn't hurt her.

If a show dog, and the breed standard calls for it, then yes the tail and ears must be docked and cropped. My pups tails are done at 3-4 days old, because at this age there is no muscle or grissle in the tails formed yet, just a little spot of blood one drop maybe and not crying, no pain.... never had a problem yet. and the ears, my vet does them at 3-4 wks old, cuts and then uses super glue all around the tips, the ears stand, no stitches, no bleeding, and as the ears heal very nice and neat, there is no scars, no infections and the super glue falls off by its self, thus no stitches to remove to hurt the dog....and no bleeding, when done the old fashioned way, the vet has to remove the stitches and the ears scab and bleed, not the way we have been doing it for 7 yrs now...and alot of vets in Oklahoma use the super glue technique also,. My vet has had all kinds of show people from all over come to him, he does the best California Curl on Dobies I have ever seen, super glue no stitches and no scratching... it is great. on My Min. Schnauzers, if I determine they are pet quality, then I leave it up to the adoptive home if they want it done at birth or not, if they do, they hae to take to my vet also, and this is in my contracts as well as spay/neuter... most people do it for the looks, but most show folks like me, will not do it unless dog is pup is show quality. so really it is up to the person that owns the dog. sometimes people adopt older dogs and the standard says should have this or that, but really they are hurting the dog to do it at an older age, just let the dog be natural... I do, I nursed many many dogs after ear croppings and it just breaks my heart to hear them crying and crying from the pain of it, even with morphine on board. It is cruel and unnessesary. Would you want your ears cut off? Why do it? Why? They are cuter with the ears God gave them.
Also, not only is it extremely painful after surgery, but all the visits to vet getting the ears retaped and sutures removed. Ouch!!! Now about the tails, if you have the tails docked when they are newborns (2-5) days old it is done withouot any anesthesia or local anesthetic. The puppies are simply held upside down while the Doctor cuts the tails off with a scissors or scalpel blade. And yes the puppies scream! If your puppy is older and having the tail amputed under anesthesia then it's not so painful, and they probably won't mind it much if their ears have been cut off.

Yes, that is what makes them look like Dobermans and mean. They are great dogs, my mom used to raise them.
You cut pigs testicles off, circumcise boys. people have piercings, animals are spayed and neutered. What is the big deal? There are a lot of dogs that have their tails cut off and other animals too.

THAT IS ONE OF THE CRUELEST THINGS A PERSON COULD DO!! i hope you know that doing this is very bad, sad, and wrong.. that is torture.. what if i came up to you with a cutting tool and cut of your ears and tail (butt in human case) ITS CRUEL!! you should be ashamed of yourself for even asking this question. people who love this world and love animals like i do would know that this is a horrible thing to do. knock some sense and sanity into your head or i will knock it in there for you!! NEVER BE CRUEL TO ANIMALS OR THE WORLD!!!! shame on u shame!! i dont know why people are so against animals these days!!! ANIMALS R PEOPLE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! treat an animal how you would want to be treated. if you dont want ur ears and butt cut off, an animal doesnt want that either.. and if for some odd reason you r stupid enough to want to cut off ur ears and butt, you leave the animals out of it.. and i would suggest going to a mental center!!! WORLD PEACE!!!! and i hope you heard me loud and clear!! and remember.. there are always punishments for animal cruelty.. even if it isn't soon after u use violence on poor animals.. it could take years.. but you will suffer if you hurt animals or this beautiful earth. you better of heard me loud and clear.. i hope u get my point.

If tails are done by 3 days old and ears no later than 12 weeks, it's not cruel. It's been done since the breed was first invented.

As Alyssa says they have been doing this a long time and providing the dog is very young still it should be ok. It is a perfectly safe and i belive a relatively pain free thing if done correctly.

I think it's 100 per cent wrong. And for those who think it's okay to do if they're young enough, my question is why would it be less painful then?
