As read on Sheldon Browns website he mentions that they can be combined but I do not understand which wheels (front of back) should have a certain tyres eg front for traction, or rear for slippage. How does one go about combining different tires and does this work well?

Thanks.

Sure you can. If I did, I'd use a knobbie on back for the needed traction and a semi slick on front.

Usually, I combine a narrower tire on the rear with a wider at the front. Right now I have 2.3 Nevegals at the front and 2.1 at the rear.

Depending on what you're riding, a narrower rear tire will provide better acceleration, and you need to have the front with better control.

I can't think of any advantage to that. Any surface loose enough to need knobs in the back for traction will need them in the front for steering. Same the other way around.

On some bikes for diffrent kinds of dirt people will put a slick tire in back.

No real advantage.
