My first girlfriend was the summer between 3rd/4th grade then into the 4th grade until I left upstate NY and went back to Delaware to my parents. We spent every minute together we could...holding hands, kissing, hugging, walking around, talking. She even initiated some sex play.
My first TRUE LOVE happened when I was a sophomore...December, 1962. It lasted until I left for the Navy, but I saw us drifting apart the summer before I left.
We've seen each other occaisonally over the years but not talked since 1989. I saw her once as I was visiting my mother 3 years ago and I was riding my motorcycle into a shopping center as she was coming out. Our eyes met. I don't know if she recognized me (had on a shorty helmet, beard, glasses, leathers), but I sure recognized her and it felt like someone squeezed my heart. After over 42 years, she still has a small piece of my heart.
On her birthday in 1988, then '98 (and now next year...she'll be 60), I've sent her a SWEET 16 birthday card. When her husband died in '92, I sent a condolence card and she wrote back. Her mother is so cold, she told Barb "See, if you had married Don, you wouldn't be a widow now." She never liked Barb's husband, but doted on me. When we were dating, she said when we got married we were moving as far away from her mother as possible. The furthest she lived was about 3 miles and lives about 1 1/2 miles from her now. I've been stationed in 3 countries during my time in the Navy (and visited over 30, some more than once). My sister sees her from time to time, and a few years ago told her that she thought I still 'had a thing for her.' DUH. My sis said Barb's eyes got a bit wet...who knows? It's said you never forget your first love.

Well I do have to answer this since my daughter is 13 and asked me the same question last night, I had always told her that she could date at 16 she agrees with me that she does not want to get involved with boys at her age but has asked me what to say to a boy (she has someone in mind) that asks her out and she has to say no. Its difficult, her cousin has a boyfriend and she has just turned 14, they are very innocent he is in the year below her at school and they appear to be just friends but all parents worry about raging hormones etc., and once a girl starts her periods she can get pregnant. At that age its unreasonable to expect kids to understand how to take control and say no. Its a worry for all parents and I do understand how you feel but I have to side with your parents on this, be friends with boys but dont "date" until you are old enough to understand all aspects of a relationship. Good luck.

We were 12, the summer between 7th and 8th grade.
As 8th grade started, we went our separate ways.
We never had a class together, and I never saw her in High School, and I have not seen her since High School graduation, many many years ago.

I was sixteen. He was seventeen. After we graduated from high school, I moved away. I found out at my 10 year reunion that he had died from cancer.
His precious memory lives on, he was very special, and I feel so fortunate to have known him -- that he was my first date, my first kiss, my first boyfriend, my first love makes it so much more dear to my heart.
