Your doctor should have explained to you about what the drug is and what it does.
Prozac is not for treating people who are "crazy." I know everyone says things like, "That crazy ***** didn't take her prozac today," but they don't know what they're talking about. TV and movies and jokes and everything use "Prozac" to mean a drug that makes anyone with any kind of "craziness" better. That's just urban myth.
Prozac treats depression. Not insanity. Depression. It is an SSRI-- a Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor. It increases the levels of seratonin in your brain. Seratonin, simply put, makes you feel "happy." It decreases anxiety, helps you relax a little, and gives you a feeling of well-being. There are theories that some forms of depression are linked to low levels of seratonin.
WARNING: Prozac is supposed to alter your mood. Many people take it and feel better. Some people take it and feel more hostile, irritable, moody, impulsive, or suicidal. It is known that a disturbing percentage of young people who take antidepressants (like Prozac) kill themselves, often when they seem to be getting better.
If you start to think about killing yourself, or have any mood changes that you're not comfortable with, tell your doctor right away. He won't lock up up for being suicidal, he'll just take you off the Prozac and consider other ways of treating your depression.

Prozac is a Serotonin Specific Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of (clinical) depression and OCD (Obessesive Cimpulsive Disorder)
It is No longer recomended for anybody under 18 except in (special circumstances)
However, I would strongly suggest you do not take it until you have been back to your Dr and you do this ASAP so you can start treatment.
No anit-depreesant is a magic pill that instantly makes things better. They all have many side effects. They should be used in conjunction with other forms of treatments (counselling, theraoy, lifestyle changes).
If you do not even know what Prozac is then your Dr has failed to even inform you of the basics let alone set out and a full and comprehensive teratment plan which you understand, know how to follow and are in agreement with. It is dificult to be certain he has even done a full and proper evaluation of your illness.
If your return visit to the Dr proves no more informative and useful, please chamge to a new Dr who has a better reputation for dealing with depression - it is an illness that kills!

I'm taking an antidepressant (Citalopram) and I'm not crazy either :)
Taking an antidepressant has helped me so much but it doesn't always work for everyone.
If you have any concerns, questions, or if you feel taking Prozac isn't helping you, then don't hesitate to contact your doctor, that's what they are there for after all.
If you do a search on the web it will give you a lot of information on Prozac, but I've posted a few links that might give you a little bit of information.

Prozac is an effective drug for depression, nothing more, nothing less. I was on it for many years until I met the woman who cured me of "severe, chronic depression" (at the age of 49, finally) by becoming my wife and giving me the love I'd been missing all my life. It helps to alleviate some of the chemical imbalances in your brain that contribute to feelings of depression. It is only, however, a treatment of the symptoms. The causes of depression can vary so greatly from one individual to another, that identifying and eliminating the causes are often far too difficult, and so the doctors are left with nothing more cost effective than a pillo to treat the symptoms. Give it time; it can't hurt to try it, and if it doesn't help after several weeks, try something else.

It's an anti-depressant, it makes you feel... happier. I think really though it sort of blocks negative thoughts. You should be VERY careful with prozac. If you feel strange or dont' feel like you can trust yourself contact someone immediately. If you are young and taking prozac it can make you act crazy if you are taking too much so, be careful

It is an anti depressant. I was on it and it really did help. It didn't make me a super happy freak, it just took the edge off. It saved me. I will tell you that I lost my appetite for the first couple of weeks, but then it went back to normal. It was the only side effect I experienced.
