I was wondering if Robert e lee and his forces were to land on modern day hati and attempt to take control of the country would they be successful or completely whipped by machine guns? Keep in mind he could also pick up some the machine guns if he won a battle. Either way i think it would be an interesting fight. Not as good as superman and batman but still a good one

I don't know how big the Haitian military is, but I'm sure the confederate army would outnumber them, probably double them. Even with machine guns, I think the Haitians would be outmatched by experienced troops. But it's really hard to argue the case.

To get to Haiti and land there requires knowledge of both the tactics and logistics of amphibious warfare. Lee and his military contemporaries had little in the way of that knowledge since the doctrinal base of amphibious warfare wasn't refined until the 1930s. In the battles which were lost by Confederate forces during the War Between the States, they showed no terrain appreciation, prefering the frontal assault over one of entrenched troops holding the high ground and interdicting approaching forces.
Sorry. But Lee wouldn't have prevailed in this venture. The real irony is that the man he surrendered to at Appomatox Court House (Ulysses S. Grant) later became President and asked the Senate to pass a resolution to annex the whole island of Hispaniola. It failed by one vote.

Yes. Understand that he had some very smart officers under his command, Longstreet, Jackson, etc. Machine guns are really only good for suppressive fire and for stopping massed frontal assaults. The weapons they had would be adequate for combat in Haiti were line-of-sight ranges are generally less than 300 meters. The things that would be tough for them is command and control; modern forces with radio communications can react quickly to changing battle conditions, but like I said, they were very smart guys and I'm confident they would adapt.
