Through hypnosis you can elicit peoples feelings, sence of smell, sence of touch even make them feel love or remember love, I think its possible for a person to do this but even the top hypnotists are not advanced enough to do it to everyone or to do it to the extent that they do in say, Naruto
Say if you give a person some really strong drugs and then use hypnosis you can make them halucinate what you want, to me this is what is genjutsu, it all depends on how sugestable the person is and how they use their sences
If you get into hypnosis you will understand things a bit, its a very complex science
PS: your neighbour sounds like a **** though, I wouldn't listen or go anywhere near them again

Watch Batman Begins. See the part at the end of bruce's ninja training where he breathes the gas? That's genjutsu. People do it to themselves a lot at a matter of fact.

Generally speaking, no Genjutsu isn't real.
But I think with any sort of 'spiritual' based arts and techniques like that, it will work only with those who have a strong belief in its effectiveness.
