FMLA is for the long term care of a sick child, parent, or other relative, and must be applied for in advance. You can't use it one 1/2 day at a time - it doesn't work that way.
Your company can fire you for excessive absences, whatever the reason for those absences may be. Companies exist to be profitable, and no judge is going to say that an employee should be granted time off as much and as often as needed to take their child to and from the doctor. The child is your responsibility, not the company's. (I'm not being critical of you, I'm just explaining it in the eyes of the law). You need to arrange help with her father or other family, or schedule her appts outside of normal work hours if it's become a problem for your employer. Or, find another job.

The family medical leave act is approved if someone in your family has a serious illness that requires an extended absence from work, but it is not paid leave, and it is only considered for long absences.
The laws of every state are different, but if you live in a 'right to work' state, then your employer can fire you at any time, for any reason, as long as that reason id not racial, or religious discrimination.
So check the laws of your state, but if you have used all your vacation and personal time, then they can fire you, or if they can prove excessive absences. Even in the most strict states, if you have had a verbal and written warning, your toast the next time the situation occurs.

I believe that The Family Leave Act is a federal policy. They can't write you up or fire you for leaving or missing work due to an illness in the immediate family. I believe that even includes parents and in-laws. You are due (don't quote me, do some research on it) 2 weeks a year which the company is not required to pay you for.
I would be very careful though if you live in a Right To Work state. This really means that the employeer can fire you for whatever reason they choose as long as they don't cite family illness, pregnancy or an unexpected disability.

I would ask to see what your company's policy is and get a not from the doctor. My son's doctor will provide one is I need it. My son comes first and if he's sick, I pick him up from the sitter's. I think that if you aren't someone who calls off alot or needs to leave alot for your child, there is no reason your company should be threatening you.

It depends on where you work. If you get fired, I would get a lawyer. Until then, see about FMLA papers filled out by your doctor for your daughter should her illness flares up again. These papers are supposed to protect you.

They CANNOT fire you for leaving work to pick up a sick child. Contact your local office of L&I (Labor and Industries) They can let you know your legal rights. If you have been there for at least a year and there are more than 50 employees you are covered by FMLA for up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, so they would be in contempt of federal law!

A legal excuse? Well, employers all have different policies regarding absences, but it doesn't have anything to do with the law. They are within their rights for firing you for excessive absence - and excessive is defined each company. Sorry - find someone to help with the care of your daughter, or start updating your resume.

Change jobs. I would not work for a company that does not understand the importance of running a family or being a mom.
