Could you get rid of the padding? Probably a lot less expensive than new carpeting. That's a big problem with liquids on carpets--you think you get the stain/odor out, but it's still in the pad, and it comes back. There are some enzymatic stain and odor removers out there--you could call a local vet clinic for some specific recommendations. Urine Gone, Pet Odor Eliminator, Nature's Miracle, and OdoBan are just a few. If you do get the stain/odor out, you might want to ScotchGuard the carpet to help if it happens again. And if the cat is an unneutered male, having him neutered will reduce the odor of his urine and probably cut down on inappropriate elimination. Good luck--I know how tough that odor can be to remove!

ODOBAN.... it's a Sams Club exclusive as far as I know. It's an all natural enzyme enriched deodorizer and disinfectant. It comes in a one gallon jug and it's diluted with water. It yields about 32 gallons of product when mixed. Occasionally you can find a small spray bottle in Walmart. The small bottle doesn't get diluted. You use it once and the urine smell is GONE period. And you don't have to clean it up, it's 100% safe around children or pets. It's $10.00 a gallon. I used it to remove the smell of male cat spray from the house we rented out. They'd let him spray on the carpet for two years and the smell was down to the subfloor and the whole house reeked of it. We soaked it...all of it, and left. The next day the smell was TOTALLY gone.

You have to buy the stuff that has "enzymes" in it that is made to kill the thing that makes urine stink. Febreeze will cover it up but after the Febreeze dries up and wears off, the odor will still be there. I know from personal experience. The only thing that worked which I wouldn't get because of price was the stuff that is literally sold to specifically get rid of pet odors.

You go to your local pet store and buy a product called: "Natures Miracle - Skunk odor remover". It is a true miracle and removes the smell of anything (cat urine included) and totally removed the smell of a skunk that sprayed my dog. I put it on him the morning he was sprayed and then bathed him and took him to the vets to have his nails clipped. I had sprayed him with some Calvin Klein cologne and everyone was telling me how great he smelled. I told them he had been sprayed that morning by a skunk and they could not believe it. This stuff is very powerful and very effective. Call and ask the store about it before you buy it and they will tell you how great it is. http://www99.shopping.com/xPR-Nature_s_Miracle_Skunk_Odor_Remover_32oz~RD-25126604420
