When a dog gets fleas you need to treat the house, all of the pets in the house, and the yard. You need to think that for every one flea found on the dog, there are 20 eggs laying around in the house. If the dog has already got fleas, i recommend giving a capstar(a type of pill at the vet), and then applying frontline. Capstar lasts for 24 hours and the frontline lasts for one month. For treating the house i recommend using a product called siphotol. Flea bombs do not work. They do not get under floor boards, where fleas can hide. Also, it is hard to kill fleas in the pupae stage. You may need to bomb /siphotrol the house in three to four weeks.

Prevent fleas with a low carb diet. Less grains (no corn wheat cellulose or soy) and no beet pulp. these are not natural in a dog's diet. These thing break down into sugar and the fleas (like most insects) are attracted to sugar. This should include the treats too. To get rid of them get some diatomatios earth (sp). Sprinkle this every where the dog is (outside and in). It is so safe it can be used around kids and puppies! Before the DE get some neem oil and mix it into the dog shampoo. this will get all the fleas off your dog. it is a natural insect repellent. You can find this stuff at your natural pet food store or farm supply store (for horses please dilute!). The top spot products can cause seizures and even death I would stay clear from them. Scary! Good luck!

Avon Skin So Soft is a darn good product to get rid of fleas. I used to bathe my dog with it and she never had a flea problem. I believe that it is sold now in drug stores. It's pretty economical, because a little bit of the stuff goes a long way. It also acts like an insect repellent if you rub it on yourself.

Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Advocate will all keep fleas off your cat for up to a month - Frontline Plus for up to six weeks.
Don't use Dawn, don't use store-bought products. Changing an animal's diet does not make them less delicious to fleas.

Try using Advantage, Advantix, or Frontline. They kill the fleas and larvae within 12-24 hours.

You should get some flea powder for your yard.
To get rid of the fleas already on your pet, give them a bath using household dish detergant DAWN. It's approved for use on wildlife and it's safe and effective. The fleas will die instantly!

Advantage. Just to tell you it won't go by itself. My cat had it for 2 years and then I convinced my dad to buy advantage. Never seen a flea ever since.

Frontline Plus is my first choice. There are other good ones out there. It doesn't prevent, but when they bite the dog, the Frontline in the dog's system kills the fleas.
You can also look at Advantix and Advantage.

cat or dog?
frontline for dogs,
and advantage for cats.
and you should just give your animals the suggested regular dose for these. they are meant to be monthly, which works out because fleas can be brought in to your house in a ton of different ways (on people, clothing, animals..)
:)
