Revelation 17:14 These shall make war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.
14:3 And they sung as it were a New Song before the Throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that "Song" except the hundred [and] forty [and] four thousand, which were redeemed from the Earth.
14:4 These are they which were not corrupted by women; for they are pure. These are they which follow the Lamb wheresoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, [being] the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
14:5 And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the Throne of God.
15:3 And they sing the "Song of Moses" (Old Covenant) the servant of God, AND the "Song of the Lamb" (New Covenant), saying, Great and marvellous [are] Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] Thy Ways, Thou King of the holy people.

We do not get there on our own strength but are chosen from the very beginning. God know the beginning and the end and all in between. He had a plan for you before you were born.
So God calls many to accept Him but they do not reply for they were not chosen to accept like Pharaoh's heart was hardened to not let God's people go. Those that answer God's call were chosen and given an ear that hears and eyes that are open and a heart that is willing to allow faith to grow.
We are not to boast about our Godly position for we did not achieve it on our own but by The Lord's choosing us.
All Glory belongs to the Lord.
This does make free will a question. The Lord's ways are beyond our comprehension , but to embrace the alternative of what is good and Holy is not logical.

All are called to Salvation ( Matthew 11:28; Rev. 22:17 ) but few will finally be saved ( Matthew 7:13-14; Luke 13:23-30 ).

Excellent question! It means many are INVITED to live with God now & after physical death (i.e., via evangelism), but only a few people are SELECTED by God, which happens as a result of their sincere faith and confession in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:10-11). [God does not select by whim, but by determining whether one truly trusts in and confesses Jesus as his LORD & Savior. God knows the heart of every man.] Each believer from the moment of salvation receives the garment of Jesus’ righteousness in exchange for his sins (Rom 3:24-25). After death, it is this garment of salvation that validates one’s citizenship in heaven where the garment of his own self-righteousness (i.e., works) is useless (Matt 22:11-13). Please read the parable at Matthew 22:1-14 for context, which is where your question directly comes from.

Mt 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
Many are called by the hearing the Gospel; but few, (comparatively) , are chosen to dwell with God In glory, because they do not come to the God, even though they have heard.
This is an allusion to the Roman custom of raising their militia; all were enlisted, but only those who were chosen served.

i believe it's a way of saying- dedication to theTruth, and especially living the Truth is much more complicated and difficult than it seems
being chosen- meaning you are living it- not just desiring to live it
a wake up call to see through the words- see past the words and at theTruth to which the words are just pointing
in other words- not just a mental acceptance- thinking you are 'saved' or will be allowed into the kingdom- sometime in the future
but actually living the Truth, the Life and the Way...Being it...
and having the Kingdom unfold before you
not many have achieved this...but it is possible for everyone

I think it's very simply that the gospel is preached to many, but few respond in a manner in which God has chosen as acceptable to him.
