My 5 year-old male neutered cat limps intermittently. This happens in both his back legs, usually at night (around 7 or 8). He is overweight, but otherwise healthy. The vet said that when he is limping I take him to see him, but this always happens when the clinic is closed. Could it be serious?

Well, it could be a number of things, but certainly being overweight is not helping - extra weight exacerbates all limb problems. So I would certainly see about getting him to lose weight - get the vet to recommend a decent food and tell you how much your cat should weigh, then get him eating the correct daily amount for the weight the cat is supposed to be. Email me if you want more help getting your cat to lose weight.

As for the limping, the vet should be able to help you with that even if he doesn't witness the actual limping - by physical examination! He should be able to palpate the legs until he finds out where the source of the pain is, even if it's arthritis - not impossible for a 5 year old cat, especially if he's very overweight. I think perhaps I would make an appointment with a different vet, one who knows this!

It could be. Or maybe not. He could have a non healed pulled muscle. Hip dysplasia. Arthritis. A spinal problem. Cancer. Maybe something he aggravates in a paw (ie splinter). The extra weight doesn't help. Anyway, if he's not limping the next day , take him and have the vet take a look anyway. Ask for xrays.

If it's happening regularly, there's something going on.

Sounds like arthritis I don't know though. Take him right away to the vet. Could be something serious. They need to take x-rays.
