The best advice that I have ever heard regarding the scholarship search is utilizing more than one approach. It is wonderful that you have begun your scholarship search right now because most of the scholarship deadlines end in the spring. I recommend applying to any scholarship that you qualify for no matter the amount. I will include some free resources to locate college tuition money.

First, I recommend completing the FAFSA form even if you think your parents make too much money. There is a lot more to financial aid than just the Pell Grants. It includes the work study program, need based scholarships from the college's endowment fund, and subsidized student loans (lower interest rate than private student loans). The amount given is based on the federal percentage formula to determine what your family can qualify for in contributing to your education. It includes your family size, your income and savings (at a higher percentage rate than your parents), and your parents income and savings. There is the CSS worksheet for an additional fee which can bring even more money. This needs to be applied for in January, early February, or by the earliest financial aid deadline of the colleges you applied for admissions. This needs to be completed every year until you graduate from college.

Second, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships and some state funding programs (not all need based). These are the easiest typically to get compared to the national ones.

Thid, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. Check back on a regular basis for their updated list of scholarships because new ones are added every week. There is a scholarship for almost anything including wearing duct tape to the senior prom.

Good luck!
