I would say yes, as up in Scandinavia (Or at least in either Norway or Sweden) is one of the most secular places on Earth, and they certainly aren't in chaos and disorder.

I think so! That's why I support Secular Humanism! Our country's government was established on priciples proposed by Deists, Agnostics and Atheists, and in fact many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and our first presidents were un-believers in a personal God and expressed that the world would be a better place if religion either occupied only the most minor role in human existance, or ceased to be altogether (certainly a much different reality than the mocked up version of history which I was taught growing up)!

It has been pointed out that religion has never defended the freedom of the individual, but rather has always been the lap-dog of the aristocracy and an instrument for human enslavement under tyrranical despots. Look at what is happening to education and government now, under the aegis of the Christian Conservative Right, or in Europe under the quickly growing Muslim population, if you need any more convincing as to why our founding fathers thought it so important to defend the freedom of the individual from, among other things, religious suppression.

That's already partly the case in some parts - in England there would be an uproar if a Prime Minister said Jesus helped them come to decisions about policy - although American evangelical movements are starting to set up camp here which is worrying from an educational perspective. Humans would still be good and evil though either way, religion or no religion.

Most religions promote hygiene, education and the betterment of humanity as a whole. While Science strives to prevent diseases, improve living conditions and make life easier. They both have the same goals though their paths may vary. Why then do they go out of their way to disprove each other rather than work in cohesion keeping aside their beliefs

Maybe Chairman Mao was just ahead of his time hey?

I mean he thought religion was posion and one of the biggest cause of wars so he made it illegal..

The point I am making is some people think it takes precedence over politics and education. Religion will always be here in one shape or form... It has had its uses in the past and who knows maybe in the future it will be useful again.

Yes it would. So long as the personal choice wasn't compromised. Yes it would. The choice to worship as you see fit is key.

School is for learning tools needed to be successful in society. Politics are for people to be elected into positions of power. Religion has no place in either.

Well, first of all, you can't. Most religions teach a code of morals, which would affect the decisions politicians make. Educators not so much, but it still, a teachers views slip out sometimes, especially in Science and History classes.

But if you could, and did, I think it would benefit society. Kids would be offered the chance to think for themselves.

ABSOLUTELY, I think most people on here know my opinion by now. Religion is different from a belief on God, religion is a belief in the Bible and the church, belief in God is a personal relationship with your deity!
we do not need religion, there is no need for the churches, if God is real in your mind, then you only have to believe in him, for him to believe in you, there is no need for the 'middle man'.

religion definitely has no place in politics. though in England it does not raise it head often, but America is fighting their war with Iraqi based on the false belief of President BUSH, to whom religion is his life, I would not be surprised if he thought he was doing it in the name of Jesus, which would be preposterous for a modern western Leader. Bush seems to mention God and Jesus in every speech he makes,, this gives the impression that most Americans are fervent Christians, YA seems to back this up, most Christians on here are Americans.
Faith and Religion should be something you practise in the comfort and privacy of your own home, it should not be broadcast to millions as a reason for anything.

I personally believe that society will be destroyed thanx to Religion, wars will break out, for religion breeds friction and friction breeds war. Religion and the religious organisations are just tools of the profiteering bureaucrats to extort money and to keep control of YOU. The world as a whole needs to wake up and see the truth, the bible is a lie, the church is a business and their consience is being subjugated by the ruling minority - the Papacy - church leaders. They do not care about you, they do not even care for all the Preists and Vicars that buy the silver from their tongue, for they are just the unknowing pawns, within the giant chess game filled with deciet and filled with greed.
