Are the numbers for the total number of puppies in all of the litters or the total number of litters? I'm guessing it's the latter, but wanted to double check with someone who knows.

That is LITTERS. There were actually 123,700 some Labs registered last year, and like 43,000 some litters.

You think 1231 is the only Bernese dogs registered last year?? No, that was litters. That seemed low to me because they seem more popular than that. For Labs though, it is pretty amazing. If there were 123,00 some Labs registered last year, and 43,000 some litters, and we KNOW not all litters or dogs are registered.....NO WONDER there are too many Labs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would LOVE to see them break that down by state. Wonder what area of the country would have the most litters registered???????? Wonder if Kansas or Missouri would have the most!!!!!!!

I looked... but I'm not certain. It seems to me this would be puppy registrations as SURELY there are not 33,000 Yorkie LITTERS being registered a year?? That would be 660 litters per state per year..... or 55 litters per month per state (it just seems an unrealistic number to me)

Or in the case of Bernese: 1231 litters .... which given an average of 4 pups a litter would mean nearly 15,000 pups... again.. it just seems out of whack (good dawg.. where are they all going if this is true... I had over 100 ppl interested in the 7 pups I had!!!)... although I'd believe 1231 pups registered.

Write AKC an email. They're pretty good about answering questions.

EDIT: Good heavens... if this is the number of litters...WHERE ARE ALL THE BERNERS!!!!! No wonder there are so many homeless dogs!!!

The AKC link you gave is giving the public the count of litters registered in those years.

Just think, those are only the AKC litters registered, then there are all the bogus registrations, as well as all of the unregistered litters of dogs each year.

Shows why there is a flood of over population of pets! Do keep in mind, many of the litters registered, especially in the smaller breeds are puppy mills and BYB's. Not that it changes the burden of over population at all. But, since many of these dogs are bred under less than ideal situations from sound and healthy parents, many will not even live to maturity.

I think that's number of litters (not number of puppies) registered.
