My hubby has really bad allergic reactions to cats. For the most part we are able to avoid contact with kitties, however, most of our friends own them unfortunately. We'd like to be able to go to our friend's houses more, but when we break down and do this, it ends up getting my husband really sick. He tries taking things like Alavert and Benedryll, but they leaved him doped up and don't seem to help all that much ultimately.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to control/beat the allergy symptoms? (We would prefer a natural or holisitc method as opposed to Rx meds). We hate to continue turning invitations down to people's houses, but at the same time, I can't stand to see my hubby suffer. Help!

also, just a note, it seems that my husband's allergies are just to cats. We have 2 large dogs that shed like crazy, and it doesn't bother him at all. I wish the rest of my friends were dog people!

This is kind of funny...but my husband was allergic to cats. Horribly...I mean the works, and Benadryl did nothing for it. Well a couple years ago he had a brilliant idea...he wanted to adopt two cats. Yes I'm not joking.

Well the cats came home and his life was h ell for three weeks. Eyes red, sinus problems, itching, all the uglies...after that he hasn't had a problem since.

You can get over some allergies from prolonged exposure, as the body builds up to resist the offending item, but if you guys just visit periodically the body can never adjust to beat the allergy. Sooooo if you don't plan on getting a cat, I'd suggest you hold social functions at your house, or try to convince your cat loving friends to hold their functions on their patio.

Hope that helps

*cheers*

Is it just cat hair that your husband is allergic to or is he also allergic to dog hair and dust and "ragweed".
If your husband is allergic to all these things that talk to your doctor about getting your husband shots, the shots will take time to get his system to where he won't get sick from being close to cats or dogs and only be sick when the pollen count is really high.
I used to get the shots, but stopped since they didn't make stuff stronger then what I was already getting for the shots and now I only get really stuffed up when the pollen count is really high in August or September.

Get rid of the cats...the only way to stop the allergies is to get rid of the cause..or else consider desensitizing..

Ask friends to put their kitties in a room he wont go in, away from where you and your hubby are.
