It doesn't stand for anything. It is just how much more they put into the car. For instance, the Honda CR-V LX is basically an entry level CR-V with all thing you'd expect like Daytime running lights, rear folding seats, and ABS. The Honda CR-V EX is just an LX with a little more, with Folding Split Rear 60/40 sliding seats, 4 wheel drive, a 5 speed automatic transmission, steering wheel audio controls and more. Now the top of the line Honda CR-V EX-L has all you'd expect and much more with a GPS Navigation System, Moonroof, 8 way adjustable driver's side seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats and heated power side mirrors—features that are far beyond what is expected for its class.

***Best way I could put it.***

Good Luck.

For Mercedes-Benz, SL means "Sport Light".

The car company decides what abbreviations to use. There's not a steadfast rule for them.

Marketing people make up the model names and abbreviations. In some cases, they make a little sense, but from a marketing perspective, there's no reason for them to make sense except to sound cool to prospective buyers.
