I have been using Ragu for years and years and years, yeah Prego its in there and its nasty, too! I use the Tomato, Garlic and Onion, and add in my own herbs and spices. They do it right and I have tried them all! Yes pasta does taste differently when it has the sauce mixed in or served over the top. If it is mixed in each strand gets an even coating and it is evenly heated. If it is served over the top the pasta tends to be watery which waters down the sauce and is messy, also the sauce is not evenly distributed and the pasta tends to get cold before you can finish your plate. So sometimes you are getting more of one thing and not enough of the other. I prefer it mixed in, my sister prefers it on top, but she suffers from acid reflux so that may be her reasoning for that.

Secret ingredients: chopped onion (Italian sweet red), Italian seasoning, granulated garlic powder, onion powder and pepper, sometimes I add crushed garlic too or roasted garlic if I have enough time. I also, simmer my sauce with my meat while my pasta is cooking, so that the herbs and spices can open up and the flavors meld together.

I love Prego - it really is delicious even out of the jar, just like the commercials - however, I still love to dress it up anyhow. I love to put a pound of ground beef in there, and usually saute some onion and some green peppers too. Sometimes I add just a bit of tomato sauce, and some italian seasonings, just to give me a bit more sauce. Otherwise, it can end up a bit too chunky with all the extras I add. Occasionally, I even saute some mushrooms to add, or I will just use the mushroom flavored sauce.

I don't have time to make my sauce from scratch any more, so I did some testing, and after many jars of sauces available at the store (it's overwhelming, there are SOOOOOO many.....
I've found the brand Classico (what ever flavor you like) with an added 6 oz can of tomato paste (with garlic in it) and it gives it a very good "tomatoey" flavor, and helps thicken it up......remember tomato PASTE, not sauce.......I usually do two jars of sauce, sometimes three, with three cans (6 oz) of tomato paste, have dinner that night with it, and any leftover I portion into food storage containers and freeze it.......when I want pasta and sauce, I take out the container of frozen sauce and let it defrost in the sink (in the container, of course!!) while I'm at work, and it's ready to be heated when I get home.....I like to mix the pasta with the sauce and add a ladle of pasta water when I serve it......Enjoy!!!

This is how I make it: (ingredients rough)

Brown one pound hamburger, chop into fine pieces, drain water/fat.

Add two cans tomato sauce, one of those cans filled with water, one third of an onion, minced, one tablespoon oregano, one teaspoon seasoned garlic salt, 1/4 teaspoon thyme, one teaspoon basil, two tablespoons brown sugar.

Simmer 30 minutes or so on low heat.

Other than the hamburger, this makes quite a bit of spaghetti sauce for total cost around $.55. Enough for 4-5 people. Also has great aroma coming out of your kitchen.

Don't mix the spaghetti sauce around with the spaghetti. Looks horrible and can make the spaghetti wimpy.

I use Classico sauces, I also, sometimes add sauted onions or
green peppers to add extra flavor. You can also use sauted
mushrooms if you like them, and I also will sprinkle shredded
mozzarella cheese over each dish before serving it.There are
other things too, like sliced black olives,it just depends on what
you like. I hope this helped some.

Any kind of Prego. I don't mix the two. I serve noodles with the sauce over it.

You can also buy the powered spaghetti seasoning packets,(like you buy taco seasoning same isle.) Then just follow the directions on the back. This is a easy way to make your own without having all the different spices on hand.

I dislike any canned sauce...it's easy and tastier to make your own. Add oregano, basil, garlic, sugar, salt/pepper to taste to your favorite tomato sauce.

I like it better all mixed together before serving.
