My grandparents got into a bad car accident. My grandfather broke his sternum, is in a lot of pain, wll have to go to a nursing home for a week or so, but will make a full recovery. My 82 yea old grandmother badly broke her foot and ankle, and fracture her knee cap. Will she make a full recovery? I have nothing this long 4 day weekend and don't know how I will sleep, etc. What should I do? They're not going to die.

I'm sure they will recover although it may take some time. People are more resilient than people think.

I feel for you.

Even though they are old, they can make full recoveries with a lot of support and if you keep their spirits up. Usually when people that age don't recover from this kind of thing, it's because they get depressed or they don't work at getting back on their feet because they think "I'm old....why bother?" My dad broke his hip in 2004 at age 82....VERY bad break that required surgery to put a large metal support in his hip joint. He was in the nursing home for 3 months, but we visited him every day to keep him smiling and to make sure that he felt "wanted", and made sure that he was doing his physical therapy so that he would recover completely. Now, three years later, he's 85 years old, still driving his car, walking two miles a day....doesn't even need his cane anymore. It's all about the attitude, so the best thing you can do is let your grandparents know how much you love them and how much there is to "stick around" for so they will work hard to get back on their feet. Good luck and God bless all of you !

It takes longer for older adults to heal and they often dont recover 100% but with all the modern technology and physical therapy they should be able to get back pretty close to their pre-accident state. If you want to do something over the weekend, help clean up their house so that when they return home it is all sparkly for them. They wont be able to do the heavy housework for awhile so I'll bet they would love this wonderful surprise from you. Just be there for them when they get home to help out and run errands if needed.

What to do? Visit your grandfather. Help your grandmother.

If they aren't local, can you go to them? If not, then what do you do every other weekend?
