I have my first mixed-breed pup and have heard recently that it IS possible to get her registered (different type of reg. of course) and show her through AKC. I know for a fact my pup's sire is purebred german shepherd and the dam is purebred australian cattle dog....Obviously she wouldn't be eligable for breed-specific competitions like conformation but what i'm interested in is obedience/rally/agility. Does anyone know for SURE that this "limited registration" is possible to obtain titles? On AKC's website it was unclear weather or not the limited reg. was only for purebred dogs that didn't have papers or if they have something for mixed breeds as well.

Also, assuming this is possible, does anyone know how to go about getting an application? Cost? Limitations?

lol, I'm not an idiot, I know her parents being purebred doesn't mean anything, my point was just that I know exactly what the mix is.

My understanding is, unless she's registered somehow, she's not eligible for shows/titles? I'm really only familiar with AKC shows.

Thanks! I wasn't clear on the difference between ILP #s (doesn't have papers for whatever reason?) and limited registration (although they have papers, breeders don't want puppies bred?)...Am I understanding correctly?

*IF* a dog appears to be a purebred AND is spay/neutered it can be registered with an ILP number so that it can compete in performance events. (obedience, agility, tracking, herding)

http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

Edit: The key is APPEARS ... There are a whole bunch of funky looking "Shetland Sheepdogs" out running agility.

Yes, you are correct regarding ILP and Limited Registration. You can get an ILP on a shelter dog if it LOOKS like a purebred. A limited registration says the dog IS a purebred but is not eligible to create registered pups.

No, you cannot register a mixed breed dog with AKC....
nor can you compete in any performance or conformation events.
Limited Registration is for PUREBRED dogs that the breeder does not want shown in conformation nor bred. It does not apply to mixed breed dogs.
An ILP# is for dogs of purebred heritage, that for whatever reason do not have "papers"...ie rescue, shelter dog, etc...but it has to be proven and then approved by AKC that the dog is the breed you are claiming.

The AKC is about promoting and preserving the purebred dog. And that involves competitions of all types.
There are other organizations out there where you can obtain agility and obedience titles with a mixed breed dog.

There was an "informal" survey done several months ago by AKC concerning the "possibility" of giving all breed clubs and obedience clubs the option of allowing mixed breeds to compete in performance events...
And that's all I'm going to say regarding that issue.

ETA:
Animal Artwork said what I was "trying" to say about the ILP...had a senior moment! LOL

Ok, you little thumbs down fairies, notice the asker was asking about LIMITED REGISTRATION, NOT THE ILP PROGRAM.....they are TOTALLY DIFFERENT!

The ILP number, which allows a dog to compete in agility, rally, and other performance events is given to dog who APPEAR purebred, even when parentage cannot be determined. Your dog is a MIX. Not a purebred. Therefore, you cannot get an ILP number or anything that will let you compete in AKC events.
You can see about one of the other crap registries, but nothing with AKC will work for you.

Here is the rub with your problem....You KNOW your dog is not a purebred. You KNOW what parentage it came from. So, by trying to get an ILP number for it, you will be commiting fraud to the AKC. Those that get it from as shelter or rescue THINK it is purebred, and try and get it an ILP number as such. I am sure there are a lot of people that commit fraud, but do you want to???

And as others have said, the "Limited Registration" option could not begin to apply to you. That is an option selected by the breeder when registering a litter.

And personally, to me your dog looks like a mixed breed. It appears from the picture that there is merle markings on the feet. If AKC sees that, your dog will not be given an ILP by calling it a GSD.

AKC does not allow non AKC registered dogs to compete in agility, so I assume the same is true for obedience and rally. And as you have found out, you can not register your dog, even limited.

As for agility, there are multiple venues that allow All Americans. You just have to register your dog with them. You compete in their venue and earn titles along the way. There is DOCNA, NADAC and ASCA (Australian shepherd club-allows other dogs for agility) Just to name a few. I suggest you look in those directions. Search the web for these groups. Some day AKC may accept mixed breeds for events other than confirmation, but who knows......

Sorry, that's how it goes. Just because the parents are AKC registered, that doesn't include your dog. She would have to be of one breed.

I would go a head and check on the competitions you want to get her in. I don't know why that would be limited to AKC dogs unless the AKC was running the competition.

I would contact what ever venue you want to get started in and ask this exact question.

The limited registration is called the Indefinite Listing Privilege Program (ILP) and is supposedly available only to purebred dogs that don't have papers for whatever reason (rescue dog, papers lost, papers not transfered, etc).
"If you have a purebred dog that cannot be registered with the AKC and have a desire to see what your dog can do in real competition, an ILP number is your ticket to the world of AKC events and clubs! "
This sentence from the AKC website makes it very clear that it is not meant for mixed breed dogs.

That said, many dogs with ILP numbers are in fact mixed breeds (and anyone in the AKC who thinks otherwise is only fooling themselves). All the AKC really requires is two color photos (one from the front, one in profile) and a brief description of why you think the dog is the breed you claim it is. In your case it's pretty easy. You just have to say that she looks like a GSD because of her ears, tail, and markings and send in two pictures. Honestly your dog looks like the breed you would be trying to ILP her as. I've seen some dogs that look almost nothing like the breed they're ILP'd as. For example I know a mix that's ILP'd as a "border collie" but honestly the dog looks like a papillon or maybe sheltie mix to me...the only real resemblence to a border collie is that she's black and white and has longish hair.

Depending on what you want to do with your dog, there are lots of other options besides AKC (and frankly I think some of the other venues are not only more friendly to dogs of all breeds and mixes and their owners but more challenging as well). If you don't want to lie about your dog to the AKC or you decide it's not worth competing in a venue where you would need to lie about your dog's heritage check out the other options. APDT (American Pet Dog Trainers) has an excellent and challenging rally obedience program that welcomes mixed breeds (they also offer more titles than AKC rally). I do APDT rally and I can honestly say that they are about the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet in competition. For formal obedience, St. Hubert's (which is often run alongside APDT trials) also welcomes mixed breeds. And there are far more agility venues that welcome mixed breeds than don't. A quick internet search on whatever event you decide to compete in will turn up plenty of competition options.

As far as I know AKC only recognizes purebred dogs. However, CKC does accept mix-breed dogs in its registration as long as both parents a purebred as you say your are. The CKC also has competitions for obedience/agility. You can find out more about the CKC by going to www.ckcusa.com. Hope that this helps.

You cannot show a mixed breed dog through AKC in any event. You can show in tally and obedience and aglity through some other organizations though. Such as APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers).
