*With Windows 98 already running.
*Insert the Windows 2000 upgrade CD into the CD rom.
*Let it autorun. If it doesn't autorun, open window explorer and double click on the CD drive.
*Follow the directions
*During the setup process, it will ask if you want to upgrade from FAT32 to NTFS file system. Say yes, unless you plan on dual booting windows 98 and windows 2000 (it will work either way. NTFS is a newer, better and more efficient file system than FAT and FAT32. It also has security features, auditing, and disk quotas in addition to being more efficient.
*Since you're using Windows 98, during the setup process, you'll be notified of any hardware and software that isn't compatible with Windows 2000.

If you are going to upgrade your OS, don't even bother with Windows 2000, at least do the upgrade to XP.
With the new Vista out on the market now, it's going to be harder and harder to find and get the needed support for 2000. I don't even think MicroSoft offers support in the form of "updates" to the 2000 version.
Whatever you decide, you will either have to borrow the installation CD from a friend, or purchase your own copy. The upgrade is not free.

Several things you need to know before you can get an accurate answer.
example: how many MHz are you running?
You need to know info below
When you run Winnt32.exe to upgrade a Microsoft Windows 95-based or Microsoft Windows 98-based computer to Windows 2000, you may receive the following message:
Windows 2000 Setup does not support upgrading from Windows 98 (or Windows 95) to Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/203141
If I were you and not a computer whiz
I'd open the link read it and decide if you can do it and if your PC is equipped for it.
There are just too many variables to this.

Hi Theresa, how much RAM does your PC have? Windows 2000 is quite expensive even though it is very old because it is still widely used by businesses - about £180/$360 I think.
The cheapest Windows option is to buy Windows XP OEM (original equipment manufacturer) which is available for about £50/$100. Much cheaper than buying the retail boxed version.
But if you want details of where to get the very cheapest you will have to email or I.M me (your email is switched off).

you're extra appropriate off doing a sparkling reinstall. Backup all your important data, format the stress, then set up XP from scratch and reinstall all your classes and data. it fairly is well worth it. additionally, make sure your pc can run XP conveniently. If it fairly is 500MHz and 128MB RAM or under then do no longer even hassle. it will run slower than ninety 8. BTW, you may in all probability nonetheless use ninety 8 along with your cable information superhighway. you in straightforward terms must be extra ingenious and not used the bundled classes that they like you to apply.
