My sister and her husband are having a baby, and I want to get them a gift. Here's the thing: They're Jewish. I'm not. Other than the obvious "don't get anything hazardous," is there anything I *shouldn't* get for them or the baby, or, conversely, something special to Jewish culture that I could purchase?

I don't a Jewish gift given by you is going to have the same impact as it would being given by another Jewish person. I'd say give them a gift that a family with a new baby can use, regardless of what religion they are. Nice crib, stroller, carrier, maybe an offer to babysit while they go on a trip you pay for, something like that.

Look up a Jewish Synagogue in your area. Call them and ask them if they have a gift shop. The larger ones should probably have one. I was in a similar situation several years back, and I found some really special stuff for a favorite teacher of my son when she had a baby.

You ought to ask before you buy ANYTHING for the baby. Some Jewish families believe that its bad luck to buy baby stuff before the baby is born, like you're assuming that we as humans have power over life instead of God.

When my grandchildren were born, I bought each of them a cross with a child praying (dressed in pink or blue, depending on the sex of the baby). To this day, they all have their special cross hung somewhere in their bedrooms...even my seventeen year old grandson.
I don't think that would make such a great gift, in your sister's case, though.

IMO, every baby needs one special teddy bear to grow up with. If you want to, maybe get one that is blue and white, the colors of the Jewish flag of Israel.

Stay generic. It is nice of you to want to consider their religious beliefs but unless you have a real understanding of their religious convictions it is probably better to stay neutral. Baby clothes, stroller, car seat, high chair etc.

As long as you don't buy them a Cross or an image of the Virgin Mary you're off the hook.
