So I will have a lot of time to keep in shape, go to school and/or just hang out. But will I go on deployments and if so, what kind? Like will it be the Middle East or just everywhere. Thank you.

umm, wrong. if you get assigned to a ship, it won't be 9-5 m-f. you still have duty days, you still have Qual's to work on in your own time, you will have to mess crank and you will have a GQ/Fire Party station to man.

As an SK, you stand a strong chance of being sent IA(individual augmentee) to any unit..Army, Navy,Marine, even Air Force in the sand box.

EVERYBODY deploys. expect at least one if you get assigned to shore duty for your first PDS, and more if it's a ship or Sub.

NINE TO FIVE AS AN SK? HAHAHAHAOHOHOHOHOHOHAHAHA
Who told you such nonsense? Try 7 a.m. to WHEN YOU'RE DONE, YOU CAN LEAVE hours. Then add your duty hours (work until taps usually). At sea, try 7 days a week, 12 hours a day.
I've been on 5 ships, 8 oceans/seas, stationed in 3 countries, been to over 30 countries (some more than once), on 6 continents (including 13 months in Antarctica). Never ONCE did I work just an 8 hour day. Some days were slack days, and some were bust your hump days.
Your deployments will depend on your ship. Sometimes they go out for a couple of weeks, sometimes a month. Then there's the regularly scheduled 6 month deployments to the Med, the North Sea, WestPac, etc.
Since they have combined the Aviation and 'black shoe' SK rating, you have a better chance on being on a carrier or some other airdale command. Carriers suck for liberty. I once gave up liberty because I couldn't see standing in line for 2 or 3 hours to go someplace I'd been before.

You will work 0700-1530, those being standard military working hours, unless you're on a 3-section rotation at a supply-station that operates 24 hours, or on-board a carrier, then you could be in either of the other two watch sections as well. Deploy you will, rest assured of that. Since most deployments involve the middle-east situation, some time in the I.O./Persian Gulf is inevitable, but you will see more than just that. Going to school while on-board ship is difficult to say the least, due to frequent at-sea periods, duty rotations, etc. The Navy does have classes that are available on-board deployed units.

Who told you the 9-5 story? LOL!! What Navy did you join?
Storekeepers work some long hours, especially on small ships where there is only a few of them. There is lots of paperwork involved with audits and inspections etc. Fortunatley, the Navy is doing a better job at allowing time for at sea school programs such as P.A.C.E. Most ships have decent workout facilities. Most ships allow each divison or department to choose thier own time for PT and working out.
As far as deployments, if you go to a ship, it will deploy! Depending on where you are homeported and what the ships mission is will dictate where you deploy. Chances are you will do time in the persian gulf. Especially if your ship is assigned as part of a carrier group or amphibious group. Inb etween deployments you ship will probably go into maintenace period then start to do workups for your next mision or deployment. There is the possibility that your ship may get to be involved in special port visits such as fleet week, world expos or other celebrations. Good Luck!

Moe,

Don't bet the rent payment this month on a 9 to 5 job as a Storekeeper. The military does not run on 'bankers hours'.

If you are needed at 0230 hours (2:30 am), you had better be able to perform your assigned duties eiher in port or out at sea.

i was in aviation supply in the navy and you work from 7 till 3:30 while in port, unless you have duty that day, while at sea you work from 7am till 7pm or 7pm till 7am seven days a week, dont think for a minute that its going to be easy if you are at sea, if it was everyone would want to be there.

That really depends...you will probably go everywhere. But the good new is that most boats have pretty decent gym's on them. Good luck. It was a blast for me
