Martial Arts almost never comes up in day to day conversation... If it comes up don't lie, but its bad etiquette to talk to someone, and say oh yeah by the way I am Nth degree black belt.... I have won national tournaments, so yeah I'm pretty much a bad ***...
It depends on how it comes up in the conversation, and how well you know the person... If I don't know someone very well and they start talking about how cool they are because they won a bar fight last weekend, I generally just nod my head and keep my mouth shut.... there are so few real Martial Artist out there to discuss things with in a civilized nature... that's why we come here... But if you encounter someone who brings the topic up (either they are experience, doubt i or they wouldn't bring it up) or they are interested... and if they are interested... Yes please talk about martial arts (not yourself) and motivate them to find a good school

The purpose of Martial Arts is not to flaunt your abilities but constantly improve the self. By simply telling people that your good you go against the philosophy of most martial arts. This can also lead to situations where many individuals will try to have you put your money where your mouth is so to speak. Avoid these situations at all costs by not talking about your abilities. You don't want to enter into a confrontation unless you have to since you may end up seriously hurting someone or yourself.

Well, my grandfather is a martial artist too. And i only found out that he practise martial art 2 years ago. The person who told me how great he can fight used to live in the same village as him.
My grandfather told me something about strategies. If your enemy does not know that you can fight, they will approach you without any guard, making taking them down easy. If your enemy knows that you know martial art, there is a high possibility that they'll attack you from the back.
You can be proud of what you're today. But some actions may lead to ppl mistakening you as being arrogant, which can lead to many troubles.
No matter how good a person is, there is always someone who can take him down.

You should not run around telling everybody that you are good. That would come across as being a little egotistical. Keep it in your dojo and continue getting better. Depending on where you want to go with your knowledge and skills later you could tell the right people. I mean I don't know if you are training to be an MMA competitor or not but if you are, when you are ready then you can tell the right people.

One who knows to Act does Not speek, One who talks doesn't know how to Act. Remember this, there is no need to tell people if you are happy with your skills then you should just leave it at that. My friend, there is no need to TRY to get a name just by saying your in Martial Arts, if you want a name get into the ring and MAKE a name for yourself

No.Do not tell anyone, that would invite opponents to overcome you in battle for foolish reasons.Ask yourself why you allowed yourself to learn in the first place. If the answer was of noble desires,i.e.defending the weak,or yourself or to be a bully?Knowledge is power, sharing knowledge can also allow those that are mentally and physically stronger than you to,exploit your strenth and undermine your weakness. The great master Bruce lee said, keep what works and throw away what does not.

why would you need to?
do you tell people what color your underwear is?
there is no need to volunteer information to other people about everything you do.
because some people dont care, some think its showing off, and others want to test it. so any way you look at it, there is no benefit in it.
besides, secrecy is the best ace card up your sleeve. show people your cards and you lose your advantage.
there is a big difference between honesty and talking before being asked.
