we know hell and heaven don't exist, so this is a false dilemma.
A book that says "if you don't believe me you're stupid" - come on, nobody past grade school age should be that easy to manipulate.
What if the god that really exists sends all good people to heaven and all bad people to hell except people who pretended to know for a fact another god existed? then all good atheists are going to heaven but YOU ARE GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL. Why not repent when you still have time? Why risk eternity in hell?
And how can you worship a sadistic god that tortures good people - most of the people who ever lived - for all eternity?
Pascal's wager:
"If god exists, it's infinitely better to believe, since you get heaven instead of hell for eternity. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter since you're dead anyway. So overall it's better to believe"
This is, of course, false.
Some of the problems with the argument:
* The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)
* The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell
* The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else
* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.
* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (some people pray several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.
* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?
* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

No, the world would be a better place if scumbags stopped using their God to justify their actions.
Of course I would rather go to Heaven, but seeing a neither Heaven nor Hell exist, it's a theoretical question. And it doesn't matter what the Bible says. It's no more true than any other holy book.
Stop assuming you're always right and get some perspective.

Ryan, please, follow along carefully, because this is rather a challenging set of ideas. First: ln Greek, the word "theos" means "god or gods," the particle "a" means without. When we combine these we get, in English "atheist." Note that it is not "athiest." This would mean, "most athy." That's ridiculous, isn't it?
Now, moving on to the substance of your question. I suspect that you'd find very little difference in the ethics of a Christian and the ethics of an atheist in any given society. Really! Both people live in a society which has a code of behavior to which all the members of the society are subject. There will be aberrations, of course, but statistically the behavior would be pretty much the same.
You, since you believe in God, believe that God is the source of all ethical thinking. That is not the case.
Atheists are just like you, except they don't believe in God.
Sorry.

OMG!!! I can't believe it! There are ACTUALLY people in this world who DON'T believe in Jesus! It gets even more strange. Most of them are actually decent, moral human beings. IMAGINE THAT!!!
The world would be a much happier place if those convert-happy Christians would get the hell out of everyone's face with their theology and just let people live their lives.
If we were all meant to be the same, we would have been made that way. Stepford Wife Syndrome isn't actually a good thing.

Becoming an atheist is a well thought out decision.
It is not out of fear of hell, nor out of hatred of anyone or any entity.
It is a search for the truth about what our parents and teachers have told us about God. And having found that truth, a man decides.
It is only after failing to see any sense in religion does an atheist avow that indeed my mom and dad and all our forefathers had been deceived by those who invented all this.
You see, atheists do not take the issue of religion lightly. We were victims once. We don't want others to continue being victims.

Well since there is no evidence that a rational person would accept, for the bible being a factual book, I'll probably end up as worm food.
If there was a heaven or hell, I think hell sounds a bit better, after all, that would mean that god gave me my mind and knew I would use it, therefore he wanted me to go to hell.

Wow. I'm sure your neighbors, coworkers, doctor, dentist, people all around you would LOVE to hear how you view them all as scumbags.
What does that say about you?
Nice fallacy you have going there - the vast majority of crimminals in the world claim religious beliefs.
Just because someone doesn't buy your religion doesn't mean they are without ethics or morals, or don't take responsibility for their own actions.
I'd almost, not really, but almost love to be there when you're called to account for your attitude that all not like you are scum. Would be an interesting show seeing you try to justify that.

An atheist IS accountable for their actions. An atheist has no one to go to to ask forgiveness. We are accountable to the people around us. That's why I'm not calling you a scumbag!
And most atheists understand why no one can prove something does not exist.
Do you believe everything you read?

I would rather burn in hell than go to heaven.
Apart from the fact that this is total fantasy, even if your god existed I believe that it has proved itself to be an evil religion that I want no part of whatever the consequences.
