I know because I've PLANNED it for years before I breed. I've educated myself and done the research.

You can take her to the vet 30 days after the mating occurs and they can do a pregnancy test on her to find out if she is pregnant. If you already know for a fact that she is pregnant, then it is normally 63 days after mating that she will have the puppies. If it now close to the 63 day time period, she should start nesting, trying to make a nice bed to have the puppies in. She will become very restless the closer the time for her to whelp (give birth) comes. She will have contractions just as a woman would and will trying to push a puppy out. If once her labor starts and she hasn't had a puppy (let's say within a couple of hours), get in touch with your vet as there may be a problem. I have a little cairn that had three litters with no problems, the last litter I had to call my vet at 10pm. He told me to give her time. I took her in first thing the next morning (I was there when they opened) and had my vet check her out. "Yes she was definitely in labor, leave her with me and we'll see what we can do for her to make her more comfortable. Call me in a couple of hours and I'll give you an update". I called in a couple of hours and was informed that because she was in so much distress and hadn't any puppies a c-section was done. The puppies were too big for her to deliver on her own. Fortunately, I didn't wait to get her the help that she needed. I told you that to make you aware that anything can happen. Be prepared. Is she in labor?

Well I'm not sure what you are asking for sure, but. If you asking how do you know if she is pregnant. You will start to notice that she is becoming more round, she will want more attention, and she will start eating more. If you think she is pregnant then i would buy puppy chow. Reason for puppy chow it has more of the vitamins that she will need and good development for the puppies.

Now if your talking about giving birth. Before she gives birth about a week (at least for my dog) she will start looking for areas what aren't in the open clawing at blankets trying to make a nest. Once she goes into labor..She will be panting, restless and she just wont be acting the same. You will just know!

Good luck

Having a baby?? You mean whelping a litter?? Should you have bred your dog if you don't know this?? How can you breed your dog and do no research at all into the whole thing.. Regardless whether or not you researched the dogs and their background and everything else.. In the last 2 months, did you research anything at all related to whelping puppies? How to raise them? ANYTHING??

If your dog is having a baby then you need to call the tabloids. If your dog is having PUPPIES, then you need to call a vet.

She gets fat, eats more, starts nesting meaning going crazy with
her bed trying to make it nice and comfy?
If you think your dog is pregnant try feeling her belly or taking her to the vet.

What????

Do you mean puppies??? You take the dog to the vets and have him or her tell you if your dog is even pregnant first then have them tell you what to do.

Ignore Gitem. Going on tirades and passing judgment is not helpful at all in the Yahoo community.

To answer your question...early signs are:

1. Decreased appetite
2. A sudden decrease in activity
3. Nipple growth is a good indicator that your *****'s body is going through pregnancy changes.
4. Behavioral changes (either an increase in affectionate behavior or an expressed desire to be left alone)

A vet can confirm the pregnancy for you, or you can wait a while and see if her tummy starts growing.
