I've got a 9 hour layover in LAX after a 12 hour flight so need to shop after freshening up. Would it be best to check into a hotel that's near the airport then go shopping (how far away?), or is there a mall not far from LAX that has a hotel near it where I can check in?

the closest malls are Howard Hughes center, fox hills
but as others said you might not be able to stay in a hotel for under 24 hours (or you have to pay them for a entire night
even though you wouldn't be staying the entire night!)
(it also depends what time your 12 hour flight lands
(IE does it land at 6am in the morning or 5p or 7pm in the evening? (if its early am then probably you wont be able
get a hotel room for only 9 hours but if its say 6pm they
then maybe you *might* get a room (but you would
pay for the entire night )

Well, i dont think it would be such a good idea to book a hotel room for 9 hrs because your not going to stay there for the night and its a waste of money (at least to me it is) Plus, they might not even let you reserve the room cuz they might have a min. stay requirement.

If you still want to book a room (for less than 9 hrs) you can try Hacienda Hotel (its about a mile south of LAX) and go shopping at Manhattan Village (this is about 4 miles south of LAX) Just remember to give yourself enough time to get to the airport, check in and go through security. I recommend allowing yourself 1 1/2 hours (if its a domestic flight) and at least 2 hrs for international flight.

btw, traffic can get messy around LAX and the area near by, so consider that too.

Check into the Lowes hotel in Santa Monica, take a short nap and then walk over to the 3rd St. Promenade for shopping and then go catch your flight. Santa Monica is about 12 miles from LAX...It's about the closest good area..

I work at LAX. Your best bet would be to: When you arrive on the lower level of every terminal there is a Travelers Aid Booth. They get great rates for hotels. Go see them. If the booth is empty at the terminal you arrive at, go to the next terminal. Get your room, take a shower and have the hotel shuttle take you to the bus depot. It is located just outside the airport. You can take the Big Blue Bus #3 to Santa Monica or the #6 Culver City Bus. Both go to malls. The Travlers Aid booth has all of this information to help you. You can contact me at kingsleydr60@yahoo.com if you have anymore questions. I will be happy to help you.

you could take a taxi to century city mall. Its the closest decent mall.. Be aware that the traffic is not friendly at all! it could take you 40 minutes.. don't waste time in a hotel room... just go to the mall, and refresh there.... or just walk into bloomies and spray yourself with some good perfum!!!
done!
