I am worried about whether or not they offer enough support to someone with back problems and whether the posture required for sitting in them for any length of time might contribute to back pain. Need advice. :)

Bean Bag chairs are not very ergonomic. You may try some simple solutions to improve what you already use.

There are some back supports designed for use with chairs that use ergonomically accepted principles to relieve back fatigue and improve posture.

Take a look at the links below. The first shows some back support pillows with a good range of price and design. The second link is a simple device used while sitting that provides exercise and posture modification. Hope this helps.

Bean bag chairs can be comfortable for sitting but the problem I find with them is that they can be hard to get up out of.

I would recommend asking your doctor about a consultation with a physical therapist. Sometimes a physical therapist can help the person figure out the right kind of chair for someone with back problems so that it doesn't make the problem worse.
